I think it takes about that much all together. Drain it and the cooler, and re-fill it, and hope no damage. Iknow too much oil is bad, but I dont know what it hurts.

You get really high oil pressure, and it puts stress on your rings and gasskets.

i had 3 qts in the crankcase.....the oil should have been in the oil tank, idrained the 3 qts out from the clutch cover, this is a dry sump system i'm curious why so much oil would be in the crankcase,i'm thinking thats why shes smoking ....cause it has good compression and only 3percent leak down..

When there is too much oil in the bike, it will tend to blow out your exhaust ring and the oil ring....

i dont care about what too much oil will do to the bike ,i'm well aware of that.my question again is why is there so much oil in the crankcase, there should only be a minimal amount in the crankcase and the bulk of the oil in the oil tank..thanks

doesn't it mean the oil pump is bad or the screen is clogged or something?

The 400ex has two oil pumps. They are together but do separate things. The outer supplies oil to the engine and trans. The inner pumps oil out of the crankcase into the tank. Both have drive pins that can break and the pump will not work. I would check these first.
Good Luck
