Proper running temp ?

Hey guys, does anyone know a proper running temp for the 400 ?i have a digital temp gun, i was getting readings 2 weeks ago of 300 degrees and slightly higher after some long rides, latley it hasnt been quite that hot, but a little windyer to, these readings were taken from the forward side of the cooling head, the hottestplaces i could find, not counting the exaust header. that thing gets hot!
no honda dealer gave me any educated reponse on this question, infact everyone tryed to make me look like a idiot, screw them all i say.

I got a thermal reader also.
Head temp 320
Exhaust (1 inch from head) 500
Oil tank 150
All temps are in F. That was when riding fairly hard for about 20 minutes and 40 degree out side air temp. I am waiting for practice day to see what it is like under race conditions. :D
