A razor blade is kinda scary because of the soft aluminum. This is a good question.

you should use a brass scraper, but i use a razor blade just be carfull not to srape the sealing surface. Also the die grinder w/scotchbrite pad works good but it will remove aluminum also. just be carefull and you should be fine!

I like to use a fresh razor blade, single edge straight, not a knife. If you run it along a smooth metal surface lightly first, as if you were scraping something off it, you will break in that side of the razor so that it will be less prone to catching and gouging the metal you need to clean. I use this method almost daily while removing sealing compound from aircraft structures. Those types of razors are really only good for use on one side when used for scraping. You can also buy a blade holder to give you more control and safety. I also use a little solvent (such as MEK or even isopropyl alcohol) to assist in removal and for clean-up. I think the Scotch-Brite pad method leaves a little too much room for error unless you really know what you're doing. Those pads will quickly remove metal if you're not careful.

Go to an auto parts store & get some gasket remover spray, it makes it ALOT easier especially w/ the stock gasket material that stuff is a ****** to get off!! I used the spray w/ a razor blade very carefully :):) Good luck, just got my 300 back together ;)
