Show respect for Sand Mountain

There has been much coverage in the news lately regarding whether the Sand Mountain blue butterfly is endangered or not. Although the Friends of Sand Mountain does not believe the petition to list the butterfly is based on sound scientific data, we believe it is important for users to treat the area with respect.

The Bureau of Land Management has designated trails throughout 1,200 acres of vegetated dune area in an effort to protect the butterfly’s habitat. Trails marked with green signs are open to OHV use, and trails marked with red signs are closed.

Trail markings at Sand Mountain can often be confusing. If you find yourself suddenly in an area of red signs, it is best to stop and find the best route directly back to the designated open areas.

Users should know that if the trail system is not honored, BLM will close all of the trails within the 1,200 acres. Working together, we can protect sensitive species and keep our public land open to OHV use. Please remember to tread lightly!

A map of the trail system and more detailed information can be found on the Friends of Sand Mountain Web site: www.SandMountain-NV.org.
