how bout a je high compression piston, tc racing mx grind cam and bore it to 416 and if you got money left you should get a filter and exhaust but you should be doing that first anyways and you should rejet it also after each modification.

You should Check out the Hetrick`s 416 Kit. Go to WWW.HetrickRacing.COM Check out their Motors. You could get the 416 Kit and a Pipe/Air Filter with it for right around a Grand.

Yeah, I'd get the je 416 kit, a wild cam with HD valve springs and titanium retainers, complete after market exhuast, and a k&n filter, with a jet kit.
I just put my 416 together and got it jetted right and I have the je 416 kit with a xr400 cam and let me tell you, this things huals! Just make sure you don't use the cometic head gasket. Because I blew mine within 10 minutes of break in and it was torqued properly. Go with a OEM headgasket.

NOS:D For $1000 you should be able to make it pretty quick. I had about $600(not including pipe or filter) in my 416 and I was running all over 425's, 440's and piped and jetted Craptors!!! I had the XR cam, removed choke, Yoshi pipe, and a few others

Hey yo, cometic makes great gaskets. Your case is very unique. Something was done wrong.
Also, just get the xr cam. Its relatively inexpensive and all u need to do is make sure you have viton valve seals. Just order the kit from Marcum's ATV. They will set u up.

Just call Terry at Marcum's, he can get you the whole kit for about $275 (416 10.8:1 JE, xr cam, Viton seals, Cometic gasket kit). A bore job will set you back $60-70, and a manual is a good thing to have, too (I am assuming that you are doing the work yourself, it's not that tough). I don't know if you have an pipe & silencer, filter & jets yet, if you don't you can pick up all that stuff for about $5-600 bucks. So you're looking at 900-1,000 and about 3-4 hours of labor.

Hey yo, we all have our own opinions. And the stock gasket has been great.

I agree with the other Guys. Just Call Marcum`s. Terry will help you Out. If you want to get a Wilder Cam, you could. You could also Check out the Hetrick 416 Kit.
Go with the HRC you wont be sorry.

How Much is the HRC Cam? I think it`s over $300. I would Spend the Extra Money and get the Sparks Drop-In Cam if I was going to Buy a HRC. I`m sure the Sparks would be Better.

HRC cam is NOT worth the money. its expensive because it has HONDA on it but its not worth it. Terry at marcums even said there is a tiny differrence between it and the XR!

xr's only (http://www.xrsonly.com/) has an HRC copy that doesn't require hard-faced rockers, and it is only $180.

I don't think Terry would have ever said that there's only a tiny difference between the XR and HRC cams. There must have been a misunderstanding there!

I don`t Care how much more Power the HRC Cam has then a XR. I would never Pay that much for a Cam. I would get a GT Thunder, TC, Hot Cam, Sparks, or any other kind of Drop-In Cam for under $200.
MIKE400EX
03-24-2002, 09:36 AM
Warriorman, I wasn't trying to imply that the HRC cam made that much more power than a XR. Dollar for dollar the XR probably gives the best bang for the buck. The specs and the range (intended use) that they make the power in are very different, compare the spec's. BTW, the GTT cam is almost the same as the HRC.
Dave400ex
03-24-2002, 09:41 AM
I didn`t say you were. For how much the HRC Cam is, I would much rather have a little less Horsepower and a lot more Money. Where can I find Spec`s at for Cams? If the GTT Cam is almost the same, why would anybody Spend over $300 for a HRC Cam when the GTT Cam is around $165? That is Stupid. I hope people just don`t Buy the HRC because Honda makes it.

Call Terry and ask him!! There is hardly NO differece between the XR and the HRC cam. You would be crazy to spend $200 more dollars for a unoticable difference!!

Chad, What kind of Cam are you getting with the 505?

CHAD, I suggest that YOU call him! I know how to measure cams and read specs! If you can't tell the difference between the XR and HRC cams then you won't be able to tell the difference between a stock 400EX and the 505 you say you're getting! Why spend the extra money then? Chill out and go ride your 250ex for now!

If your going to be spending $350 or $375 on a cam, then you might as well spend the extra $125 on a very aggressive cam that requires springs and hard faced rockers.
Dave400ex
03-24-2002, 02:35 PM
Yeah I agree with Kabd. $350 for a Cam is Crazy. If you can Spend that Much, just Spend a little more and go all Out.

Why do you need the viton valve seals? Can't the stock ones be reused?
Dave400ex
03-24-2002, 02:46 PM
You might as well get the Viton Seals if you are going to Tear your Motor apart. They also stand the Heat better.
400exRacerX
03-24-2002, 02:59 PM
Yeah it only makes sense to change them while the motor is apart. My stock ones were blown and I bought all 4 viton seals for 10 bucks. Its a simple procedure and will take you no more than 10 minutes with the right tools. Its deinatly worth the 10 bucks, plus they last alot longer than stock.

Warroirman,, TC grinds his own cams so i really dont know what he is puttin in there. I also agree with kabd. my point was MIKE that you told him to get the HRC cam because he wouldnt be dissapointed. Well If I spent that much money on a cam and could have got a much more aggressive one for the same or less then I WOULD be dissapointed. Oh and I rode my wifes 250 yesterday. its a he!! of a fun little bike to ride:D nutn like tha fohunnerd but its fun to ride!!!!!!
Dave400ex

Chad, TC has a XC Cam for Torque, and a MX Cam that Revs Out more. I would just get a GT Thunder or a TC Cam.

Marcum's never replaced my piston and Terry told me to deal with JE because he said he never opens the box's. But he must have opened the box to put the cam, seals, and gaskets in it.:huh Well anyways I ended up using the dented piston and took the advice from the very nice guys at JE. I ended up grinding the ring grooves with a jewelry file and dressing the minor scuff on the side of the piston up with very fine sand paper. Then I put it all back together and it ran great until it blew the cometic head gasket.:( Then this past saturday I purchased the OEM honda head gasket and it runs great now. It has a very snappy low end due to the compression and a very nice top end from the cam. I got it jetted perfect and the throttle response is very crisp. All in all I think its running the best it ever has.;)

03-25-2002, 08:31 AM
Well that`s Good to Hear. Marcum`s should of given you a New Piston though. How is the Bottom End?
400exRacerX
03-25-2002, 08:37 AM
Well to tell you the truth I have only ridden it up and down my long driveway, which is all gravel and rocks. So when I really hammer on the throttle the tires just spin like crazy. The bottom end feels insane, when I crack it wide open it feels like the whole rear end is floating since the tires are spinning. I'll really find out what kind of bottom end it has when I get it on the hardpacked.

Ok, Thanks. I am trying to figure out if I want a 416 or 425.
MIKE400EX

Chad, it wasn't me who told him to get a HRC cam, but that's OK. Glad you got to ride your 250EX. My wife has a red one and my son has a yellow one. You're right, they are a h*** of a lot of fun, especially on really tight trails.
400exRacerX
03-25-2002, 09:41 AM
Warriorman, I would definatley get the 416 kit first. It is very fast and alot more reliable. Then when the 416 wears out its bore, you can more up to the 425. Thats what I would do if I were you.
Dave400ex
03-25-2002, 09:46 AM
I think I might do that. I`m not sure. TC really seemed sure that nothing would happen with the Sleeve even with a 425.
400exRacerX
03-25-2002, 09:49 AM
Yeah but when your 425 is worn out, then you have two options, one is to resleeve the cylinder with the 440 sleeve or two is to resleeve the cylinder with a stock sleeve.
Dave400ex
03-25-2002, 09:50 AM
I`ll have to think about it.
Well I got to really ride the piss out of mine this weekend for the first time on a mx track since I had my motor rebuilt,,I also repacked the muffler, removed the choke and airbox lid, put a 36 tooth rear sprocket on and ran a 50/50 mix of 93 and 110 octane,,needless to say I was keeping up with the top dirtbike riders and passing most of them. This setup is not a rocket ship,,but it's definitly got way more power over a piped 400ex. I'm more than pleased with the setup I choose...I think most anybody would be..

Rico, That sounds like a Screamer Man. Have you Raced yet? Did you ever get your Bill`s Pipe? I think everybody has been Happy with the Marcum`s 416 Setup.
