Why is everybody complaining about first gear being to tall my though my personally i would like to have a first gear tall because I do sand dunes and when your climbing wouldn't you want a tall first gear so u can go fast?
Just asking

not everyone rides dunes, everyone that i know who rides races woods, therefore the first gear is too tall for tight trials.

there is nothing wrong with climbing in first gear on my 450r cause it will smoke yours up a hill  :eek2:
And if i am climbing like a poo-c i bet your quad wont even climb some of the hills i do in any gear except first. (the steep ones)

OK we can all see that a certain somebody replying to this thread has no idea of how a Z compares to the R. I do because in first gear I smoked one repeatedly. Yes that was on the dunes and climbing a steep hill even against Banshees and 250r's I wouldnt need to shift that often. And I beat a few of them and lost afew. Once you mod the r motor you will not like any other first gear than stock for the dunes. Now when trail riding outside of the dunes thats a different story but I'm not into that so I wont bother.

first gear is real tall. good for dunes, bad for trails. alright for mx, bad for drag racing.and there is no comparing a Z to an R. all you do on a z is shift.

For the woods, first gear really sucks, but I fixed that.

Actually, first gear is great for drag racing.
It's called "holeshot".

If you are going up hills in whatever dunes you are in, that you can go all the way to the top in 1st without getting buried, you need to get out of the sand box.

whitezee has a 300ex. He about to get a 450r, and for having a 300ex he does alright.

I can holeshot most YZFs on a holeshot because of the first gear, don't have to shift immediately like on a 400ex, but it is a little too high in tight trails...I heard you could run your idle up a litle and it helps in the tight trails (proabbyl burns more gas though)

well i raced a yfz sunday and he got about a bike length on me off the holeshot and then i gained on him and ended up passing him. off the line in about 10 -15 feet the yfz is quicker. the taller front sprocket does nothing for the "holeshot".

Holeshot is about getting to the first corner, not 15 foot. Like I said I don't have to shift as often with the 14T sprocket...I'll probably go with the 15T if I get a Sparks cam and open her up some more.

yes i know what the holeshot is, your probably write, i would like having a 14t on the mx track but for 300ft i wouldnt. i know you can go really fast in 1st gear, its takes a little longer to get up to speed in a gear with a taller front sprocket.

An aftermarket pipe gets rid of that lag in the Dyno, and it seems its right at the same time your trying to get to speed on that tall gear. Even just a slip-on totally gets rid of that lag from stop to full speed.

yeah, thats what ive heard. i cant decide on sparks X6 or to get a-arms and axel. the sparks should get rid of the bog in first gear. but i mean the damn thing is fast enough for me, i just want to be more stable on the track and in the air. i just cant decide.

I had to get the slip-on...didn't want my quad to hook up next to a tree and me be in it on the next turn. I would get the axle and a-arms...worry about power later.

did you get sparks. cause if you did i didnt think he sold the slip on and pipe seperate. . if he does i might just get the slip on

No I got the HMF BB Pro slip-on. I love it, totally different machine.

i totally agree that the tall first gear is perfect for drag races. cause most drag racers start out in second gear,(most not all, no flames).. so the tall first gear is really good, its basically like second on all other quads. so i am all for it, i also ride alot of woods to.. alot of woods. i will say i am prolly going to get the 13th ,, not that its absolutly impossible to ride in the woods, its just most enegy spent on clutching and stuff. and more wear an tear.. but i like the gearing combo that the 450r has stock,

Chef, seeing your in Wash. I'd assume we're ridin the same sand boxes. The Oregon Coast?? All I said was that I have done it, sure it is capable of more. 1st is good for playin with people when racin. I'm still learnin the power of the quad so Ive tried several diff. things.

well i raced a yfz sunday and he got about a bike length on me off the holeshot and then i gained on him and ended up passing him. off the line in about 10 -15 feet the yfz is quicker. the taller front sprocket does nothing for the "holeshot".
When I first got the bike i knew 15 minutes later that it needed a one tooth smaller front sprocket. The bike was much quicker with it. In stock form the bike needs a 13t front spocket to be a woods bike. I even went 1 tooth taller in the rear. 13/39. I decided on doing one mod on a time so i could measure them and let people know my progress. Once you open up the air box or cut the airbox lid and put the proper jettting, the bottom end wakes up very much once you do this, but not enough to go back to stock gearing. Next I added the full HMF exhaust, this really made a difference. I was now hitting the rev limiter in first gear constantly with the 13t and it was making the front end too light. I then installed the Curtis sparks cam, and I was hitting the rev limiter in most gears. I then switched back to my 14t front sprocket, and its perfect. There is no problem with first gear being too tall any more, you can lug any gear in the woods and it will pull right out of it. I'm still hitting the rev limiter in the lower gears but a rev box will probably change that for me. I would highly suggest using a 13t sprocket in front untill you get an aftermarket exhaust. I love the way it pulls now!!! Its great for trails or dunes!!

thank you joe. thats what i did. im just got a 13t front and im thinking about going to a taller rear. but with the full pipe and slip on i think it would be alright with the stock rear . but i dont have a pipe yet. i havnt rode an atv that the stock gearing even comes close to the 450r. i know my friend would shift into 3rd before i would get out of first when his banshee was stock, if we were just riding around and he was staying out of the power band.
