i went to look at a 400ex with my dad today, it was nearly stock, its only mods were a k&n air filter, nerf bars and a full fmf exhaust system. it looked and sounded great, we were offered a test ride and obviously accpepted it. it was a great ride and very powerful, both my da and i rode it but then after we got home he said tht it was a gret machine and all but it was too powerful for me, do you think it is? i have 2 years riding experience with my trail blazer and i can operate a manual clutch. i gotta convince my dad it aint too powerful:( any ideas:(

You should have had him go test a few of the newer sport quads before he got on the EX.

i think if its the first time youve really ridden a sport quad, then it seems too powerful, but really, it isnt. i remember when the 400's first came out i coudlnt keep the front wheels on the ground, a few days later, i already thought they needed more power.

For a 14 year old who is new to the sport ATV market I would reccommend a 300 EX.

I went from a trailblazer to a 416ex. Wasn't hard. Just know what your doing.

400ex is the slowest 400cc sport quad out, that i can think of

mine has enough power, but i still want more:o im 14 years old, but i have been ridin since i was 11, so i got the experiance, or at least my dad thinks so and that is perfectly fine with me:) ok take your dad to ride a yfz or a 450r, then be like, since that 400ex was modded lets ride a stock one, that might get him to let you get it, definatly you will love a 300, but it will get old fast, and also mention to your dad that the 400ex has a throttle limiter, incase he wants you to start out slow, well good luck gettin a quad:)

whatever you do, I don't think you should settle with a 300 unless you don't need much power. I have only had my 400 for like 8 months, and I can basically ride it to it's full potential! I'm already tryin to save for a 450. and tell your dad that the power is really easy to control!

the reason why it felt so poweful is because the front end of the trail blazer is like a ton of bricks, 400's are defintley the slowest of all the new 400cc and plus sport quads(stock). getting off my 250r to a 400ex felt like a step down. now I ride a 85 atc250r with a 330, so a 400 would feel slower. Ride it around for 8 hours, you will want more power.

Not if he's comming off a trailblazer.

well, it only goes as fast as you make it go! and, i went from riding a utility quad every once in a while to my 400.... i had no problem at all, whoever said the power is easy to control is definitly right, its not like a big hit of power all a sudden or somehting like that, so i don't see why you, or anyone with common sense and knows their limits, wouldn't be able to handle it.

considering you can't legally ride a 400EX until you are 16...

I let my kid have a hotter machine than she was used to, and she rides it accordingly. The nice thing is, when we're at the dunes, and she needs that little bit extra to get her over the hill, it's there. And I don't worry she won't make it. :)

Children under 10 years of age may not operate an ATV (unless it is on land which is owned by the parent or guardian of the operator).

• 10-15 years of age must be accompanied by an adult* ; must have a certificate of training to operate on land not owned or leased by that person's parent or guardian or on which that person is domiciled; and must wear protective headgear.

• All operators and passengers under 18 years of age must wear protective headgear.

*Accompanied by an adult means within visual and voice contact and under the effective control of a parent or guardian, or another person 21 years of age or older.

those rules are way too strict, i know what i SHOULD be riding, and tht would be a 90cc according to the rules, you dont honestly expect anyone to follow them.

Right, try a 300ex, warrior, and raptor 350. I know the raptor 350 is just a redone warrior, but it is a little different. I think the blaster would be a close race with any of these. The warrior and raptor 350 are probably a little faster than the blaster. And all of these are slower than a 400ex.

right i got it down to im allowed a 300ex or a warrior, but my dad ses he will do some research into the 400ex and its power levels in stock form, i may be allowed a stock 400ex, do any of you know what the difference in power is between stock and a full fmf with a k&n, i have a rough idea through people i ride with but not sure. another of his issues was the "harsh" throttle response on the moded 400ex, is this the same situation with the stock one?

My dad said when I get my quad, NOTHING more than a 250anything. Maybe becuase im a girl and he doesnt want me getting hurt, but he just doesn't understand! What I really want is a Warrior350. ya know I touched one once! :)

I went from an LT185 to a Banshee.

That was when I was 14.

First time riding a clutched four wheeler....man my parents were stupid, lol, but thank God I'm more mature than usual teenagers and I knew that I shouldn't do anything stupid.

How old are you, how tall, how much do you weigh, how strong do you think you are?

A piped 400EX does have some nice power compared to a Trailblazer, considering they feel like lawn mowers.

Depending on how big you are, a 300ex or Warrior won't be that good of an idea...but it doesn't seem like you are very experienced, so a 300ex would probably be your best bet. That or a brand new Blaster (hydraulic brakes...those older ones are a b*tch)

Also don't think that just because you've been riding for a year or two on a Trailblazer that you are "experienced" and know what you're doing. I'm 15 going on 16 and I admit that two years ago I probably was not ready to upgrade to a Banshee, but because I knew better than to just go out and ride, I learned how to ride the 'Shee properly and didn't kill myself instantly.

If I were you, just go with a 300ex or Blaster. A 400ex could be too much for you, but I don't know how big you are or how mature you are. That makes a big difference.

Good luck with whichever way you go, either way you should have fun riding and always be sure to wear a helmet and be safe! Riding is a way of life and shouldn't be a way of dieing:cool: .

get it, they r gr8 machines, only reason it felt to powerfull was because ur coming off and trail blazer, i had a blaster as a first quad and 2 weeks after rding i got a exhaust, and thats wen the mods starting coming, after a year i had it almost maxxed out, i got on a 400ex, and started moddin it out, i have 2 1/2 yrs under my belt, and ex would be perfect for u

Holy crap! You can lift the back end of your trail blazer??? Well that qualifies you for it instantly! lol j/p.

You are the same height and weight as I was a few months ago...I lost about 22 lbs so I'm down to 148...oh well it was all fat anyway:blah: .

I don't really know how much experience you have, but if you believe you are fairly mature and know your limits...then it would be just fine for you. Just talk to your dad more about it, mention how you believe you're mature and you know your limits and how you know how to operate an ATV properly...maybe he'll give in. Good luck though, I'm sure you'll love a 400EX.

SOunds like your parents are concerned for your safety, as they should be. I dunno, try easing their fears by telling them you'll always wear your helmet, boots, chest protector ect. if you already don't and make sure you do it. Good luck...

see if they still havet he stock jetting and exhaust. tell your parrents to put it back stock and let you get use to it and when they think you have enough controll then you can put the exhaust back on. i know it says a 15yr old shouldnt ride anything over a 90, and thats a little harsh. i was racing my 250r at 12. its all how the kid was taught and how his parrents watch them.
