Amen Pappy, It isn't just what we eat. It is what we do after we eat. If you sit around and don't do any physical exercise, guess what, you are going to get FAT.

If you eat everything in moderation and actually get off your arse once in a while, you can stay rather healthy. I personally am slightly overweight, but it is by choice. If I want to lose a little weight, I just give up some of the junk food that I enjoy eating and don't really feel like giving up at this point in my life.

This year it is the evil carbs, and next year it will be too much protein. Before you know it, they will be injecting us with Chlorophyll, and we will be living off the sun and all die of skin cancer.

People never learn that fad diets don't work. I once went up to 200 pounds... which is ok if I was 6'2"... but I'm only 5'8"! I looked at what I was eating, cut out the junk and drank lots of water... dropped 40 pounds and kept it off! Well, mostly... :o

Moderation and exercise are two of the most important factors in being overweight and overall health. The 3rd (and probably equally important) is genetics. My great-grandfather just turned 91 and he eats the fat off his steak, eats fried chicken with the skin on, eats ham, bacon and eggs for breakfast, smoked non-filtered Camels for 45 years of his life (has quit for the last 25) and just eats everything you're not supposed to. His cholesterol is low, no heart problems, no cancer and is in great health. When I asked him what the key was to his eating habits he said to always avoid processed lunch meats first and foremost. Secondly, he has some sort of rotation to his eating. One morning it's oatmeal for breakfast, the next it's grapefruit, then bacon and eggs, etc. He rotates dinner with steak, then some soup, then chicken, sourkraut, etc.

I still think the best diet for over weight pople is the "quit eating so damn much" and the "get off your butt and do something" diets. I agree genetics have a lot to do with it too but hey you only live once, and life sure is better eating the good stuff!! People just worry way to much about what others think of them.

I do it all the time....ppls acuse me of being annorexic...cuz I'm 5'7/8 and 110 pds. :huh

The thing bout that is though...you can eat alot and not really gain weight IF its the right type of food. On a typical day I'm sittin there snackin on something *healthy* (like right now...roast beef:D ). Cuz eating alot of healthy stuff makes your metabolism faster, allowing you to eat the not so good stuff for ya here n there. Also, the crappy food...greasy fast foods and high calorie, salty junk...doesn't help out your body, not just in the weight department, but your insides too. I never eat greasy foods. Can't stand fast food crap, cuz I get sick from the grease. Even popcorn w/ butter, can't stand, I'll end up puking afterwards. Even cheese...I'm iffy on. Usually I melt it and then let the grease go to the top, pour that in my dogs dish, then eat the melted *not so greasy* cheese. I'm also the type that...loves anything home made...can't stand packaged and processed food. Goes w/ junk food too...rather eat a home made cup cake then a bag of chips. :macho So if ppls would jus stop eatin this damn fast foods and greasy food and sat down and had a potatoes, carots, meat meal they wouldn't be so hard up to lose weight!!! IMO..

The best thing to keep weight off is exercising! I lost 60lbs by walking/running on a treadmill while watching tv. Watching tv helps take my mind off of exercising and before I know, I've got several miles in and I still got to watch my favorite shows. I also cut out soda except for one in the morning. Mountain Dew is my coffee:D

I've done that a few times...but only w/ my grandmothers cooking...mmmm. X-mas, thanksgiving, and the odd dinner or two. I remember x-mas just past...I ate sooo much, then when it came desert time, I wanted my desert right away, I didn't wanna wait (my most fav ever, Rhubarb Pie...she makes THE BEST ever). So I was sittin there literally gagging it down, I could feel food in my throut coming up and I kept swollowing :eek2: ...but I wanted it so bad:( It all got down though...I pigged out real bad. I have always found that exersise and moderation go a long way with maintaining your weight.

What pisses me off more than the diets, are all the "Health Clubs" that are everywhere will to take your 50.00 a month to use thier facilities. What they dont do however is actually help you get on any sort of exersise plan. I theroize they do this cause if you cancel your membership you forfit that huge (200.00 plus) upfront money you pay for the memberships. Then 3 months later when you realize that you should really lose some weight you go back and have to pay all that up front cost all over again. Only a few things will make you rich...1. manufacturing anything disposable (cars, lighters, paper towel, comptuers, etc.) 2. anything related to children (toys, clothes, etc....) and 3rd. anything related to health or losing weight. So why would any of these companies, be it drugs, diet fads, gyms, really want you to lose weight?? If you actually lost weight they would lose a customer. The resturants perpetuate this by serving portions that are mammoth (ok, i know you dont have to eat it all, but damm if that roast beef dinner at Cracker Barrel isnt good), then when they have everyone fat as pigs, they start to offer "Low Fat, Low Carb, Low Everything" meals to lure you back in. Then in the same breath that they tell you all about the low everything meal you are eating and how healthy it is.....they come around and ask about desert!!!!!.....the cycle will never end.

Pappy hit the nail on the head in my opinion. "We live in a fast paced socity and it is easy to get food or snacks NOW" Not to mention that your busy schedule falls down to your kids, that now eat McDonalds and Burger King cause you were working till 8pm at night and dont have time to make dinner (ok not every night and not for everyone, but i would bet more than a few). So what are we teaching our children? That Fast food is ok so long as you are too busy to make dinner??

This is a huge pet peeve of mine..

And just to set all things straight, i am no GQ cover model and have a few extra pounds that need to be taken care of.

you know what pisses my off almost as much as these diets? high school wrestlers! dayum, they go and not eat anything just to drop a couple pounds so their match is a little easier. to me, thats like cheating, you should wrestle the weight class in which you typically weigh, not what you can get down to the night before your meet! later

ryan You've obviously never wrestled. Dropping 1-2lbs. to get to the next lowest weight class is insignificant. No advantage or disadvantage is to be had. A wrestler dropping 5-10lbs. to get to a lower weight class is actually at a disadvantage because these crash diets several nights before a match leave you weaker than you'd normally be. I was always fortunate in that I seemed to always be about 2lbs. under the weight class I wrestled in so I didn't have to cut weight. When I was a freshman in high school I did have to drop 4lbs. to wrestle in a varsity tournament one time. Ice cubes for dinner the night before doesn't do a whole lot for your strength the next day.

My riding buddy is on the atkins diet, and lost 30 lbs wich is great! BUT, in turn has has run his heart problem from 25% blockage of his main artries to 65% blockage. (Not sure of the exact #'s real high though! it is well over 50%) To me he was not that bad over weight, but he thinks he is. I told him he was'nt going to die of being a little overweight, but of heart failure!
I think in a few more years if it lasts atkins will kill more people from heart problems than if people would have just continued eating and living as they had been, before atkins. IMO.

I lost 25 lbs. on the atkins diet it really worked, I stayed on it heavy for 2 months and lost the weight that I wanted now I justed changed my eating habits and I have kept it off. I'm 6"5" and I weighed 230-235. now I' at 207, I have never been fat, and I could always eat what I wanted and not gain weight........Till about 37-38 yrs, old I'm now 40 and like quad junkies said, it gets harder to keep it off the older you get. If you are young and think that you can always eat and drink the way you are now and you'll never gain weight, Think again.
how many of you that responded to this thread are older than 35? and if you are, are you the same weight and pant size you were at 25? getting old kinda sucks but it beats the alternative!

When I would hit McDonald's, Taco Bell, White Castle 2 or more times a day I realized I had a problem. So for the past 2 months I have completely cut out fast food (I consider fast food anywhere with a drive-thru). I have also cut out fried foods of any kind. I am limiting my intake of bread (it fills me up too fast, not because it has lots of carbs). I also have not drank any soda, or anything with extrodinary amounts of sugar in it. I have also cut the caffiene (caffiene is in chocolate too - so no or very little chocolate). I won't refuse something because it is salty - but I will refuse to put extra salt on anything.

I have lost 15 pounds in 2 months. No excercising at all, either. I am going to start working out this week.

Just makes you think how bad that stuff really is. Which is what I think about everytime I get a craving for something fried. (It's really hard because, being a waitress, I'm always looking at food - Imagine staring at Hooters wings all day and not being able to eat any!!! :eek2: )

Although I do miss McDonald's french fries.
