starter clutch ?

My 98 300 ex starter will not engage. (It makes a ka chunk noise and engages partially but not enought to crank the bike. I pulled starter off and and gears connected to the starter they appear in good condition. I did not pull off the fly wheel cover. Any body had that problem and what did you do to fix it. Need your help.

i got that problem on the trailblazer at the moment, dont know what it is, sometimes it does what you described but soemtimes it just clicks once and thats it. i have a pull start though so i just have to use that for the moment:(

your starter probably just went. thats what usually happens. you can try to tap on it with a wrench. that sometimes makes it work
