after purchasing a Baldwin 440 motor (fully built) I though i would have been all set and wouldnt be running into any problems this year....well i thought wrong. this is going to take a lot of time to clean out this bottom end. Practically all of the lower part of the cylinder is gone!

the bolts that hold the cylinder/head down werent tight (about a full turn loose) and the cylinder was able to work enough for the piston to grab it and rip it up

That doesn't look good! Interesting that there is a Carillo rod with a flat top piston hung on it, must be a stroker. Looks like the piston skirt was seized or scuffing badly. What kind of piston was that?

yes it is a carillo rod, but it is not a stroker (i dont know why) i actually barely know any details on this motor other than it was fast

Sorry to hear about the motor. I was the guy next to you at the Rausch GNCC. That's your mx motor right? What happened to you up at Rausch, I saw you on the side of the trail?

I would contact the guy you bought the motor from. It is obviously not your fault. I missed a shift 10 hours after I got m motor done and I knew it was my fault, but this just looks like someone had 1 to many beers and forgot to tighten the most important bolts.

yea that was on my mx motor. at rausch i hit a tree and snapped my spindle. it was a lot of fun but i was ridin over my head, i needed to pace myself more. it was still fun. i had to wait over 3 overs before i was towed out of there

Yeah I saw a lot of bikes on the side of the trail. Sucks you had to wait that long to get out of there. I didn't do any major damage but there are a lot more dents and scratches then I started with.

Damn dude, that sucks. Guess I don't need to tell you that. Who built the motor?

it was built by baldwin for one of his friends. he had only used it for a little bit, then pappy had it but never ran it. then it was mine :o

I wonder if whoever built that engine checked the clearance between the new sleeve and the case. If there isn't enough clearance there, the sleeve will not expand properly when the engine warms up and will cause the piston to hang up at the bottom of the stroke. In mild cases it just scuffs the piston, and in bad cases will cause the bottom of the sleeve to crack and eventually crumble into the case.
