i just got a set of 18" kenda claws for my ex and when i had 20" razers on the back i ran a 14t but i went up to a 15t when i got my 18" kendas on the rear. now i ride tight MX tracks and a few trails. would i lose that much top end with the 14t and the claws on? and would i really have to shift that much more?

You said you have a 14t right?

Put it on & try it.
Nobody knows but you if you will like it.

Let me tell you from personal experience. I used to race XC and then started racing MX. I was running anywhere from 14/37 to 14/39 when I had my 20" razr 2's. When I put my 18" razr mx's on, no matter what the rear sprocket was, with the 14t front, I was blowing through gears in like 100 feet. When running the 18" klaws, the best gearing on the 400 that I have found is 15/37. There is still considerable bottom for the tight stuff and it will scream on top. Try that gearing I would say, and if you want more top, go to a 36t in the rear. If you want more bottom go with a 38 or 39. Either way you will be better off keeping the 15 on front for sure. I still ride some woods when Im not on the track so what I do is run both setups. I run 15/37 with the 18" and 14/37 with the 20's. Keep in mind that changing one tooth up or down on the front is like changing 3 teeth on the back.

I like my setup with 15/36 and 18in klaws on the back, I do a mix with just about everything.-darren
