the best way to get rid of spyware/adware is to buy a program to kill it, most freeware programs are jokes

If its a brouser hi-jack then using spyware programs wont kill it. That information is stuck in your registry and you will need a program to delete it from there. I had this problem about a week ago and use something called Hijackthis

A good program like Adaware will remove registry entries as well as the program files they point to.

Download Adaware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

They have paid versions and free versions depending on the feature set you want. The free version works pretty well.

Make sure after you download it, to click the "check for updates" link when you run the program to get the latest and greatest stuff.

Also make sure you have a good virus scanner - if you've gotten a downloader on your system, it'll just garbage up your computer again.

http://www.grisoft.com/ makes an excellent Antivirus program called AVG - they have a free edition for personal use. I've found & cleaned off virus's from peoples systems with this software that even Norton AV Corporate edition couldn't find. It also seems to consume far less system resources than Norton & I find it far less intrusive.

With the combo of these two programs you should be able to clean your system pretty thoroughly.

Also be sure to run all the windows updates for your system at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ -- visit there frequently and/or setup your computer to auto-update.

Good luck....

Best program I've ever used... http://www.safer-networking.org/
Spybot Search And Destroy, gets rid of almost anything. If I get somehting that it can't remove, I simply go to System Restore and set my computer "back in time" to the previous day, virus removed and I don't click on whatever it was I clicked on before to get it.

Go to C:\ ---> Windows---> Search for "TEMP" and Delete anything that looks suspicious in there. Better off deleting everything in there because its not important..

Or

Get Ad-Ware 6.0 at www.lavasoft.de

You are just trying to see if someone is dumb enough to do it aren't you?

Actually FDISK /MBR is the command I used in the past to wipe out viruses in the Master Boot Record. Many people don't even know the command exist because it isn't documented.

No, I should have explained more. I wipe out my entire hard drive and reload all my software every 6 months. I only install 2 games at a time then remove them after I get bored of them. I also found a very nice report that listed all of the services you can shut down for a totally awesome gaming machine! After all, my computer is just an adult Nintendo!
