View Full Version : My dad wrecked my R (pictures)

It doesnt look bad but weve already droped a grand into it replacing parts. Axle, tie rods, light, hood, handlebars, steering stem ect. were broken or bent.

We switched quads (i got on his 416) and we were draggin at haspin, at the end of the strip (50mph+) a little kid on a dirtbike suddenly swerved onto the strip and dad tried to dodge him but the kid dodged the same way, it seems like its how that always goes. Dad hit him, dad got thrown off and skidded, my quad flipped and rolled for atleast 150ft. Dad had amnesia for about 30 minutes...after the wreck he had no clue where he was, what happened, that he wrecked my bike, and he didnt even know my name. To say the least i was scared.

Yeah, we though about the eliminator...but the x-33 is only 11 lbs, i weighed the stock axle and it was 17 pounds!!! i love saving weight. Especially if its rotating mass. Plus i liked the pin drive system on the x-33, hubs will never come lose, no splines, and 6 inches of adjusment. The axle is actually hollow, but durablue has a lifetime warranty so im not worried about it.

It knocked him on the ground and he stopped:huh ...i figured that he would have gotten catipulted. He was ok though, the pipe on his dirtbike was bent straight up. His dad (the kid's dad) shouldnt have been allowed to have a child. Leaving a 10 year old unsupervised at haspen???? he should have just got an abortion.

Well my dad paid for the majority of the quad, lol.

My dad also had a slight cuncussion, they said not to fall asleep for a few hours. It would be like jumping out of your car at 50 mph!, i dont know how it was slight. When he hit the ground his glasses wedged up and cut his forehead. Im so glad hes ok.

Don't believe the hype on the axle - they are not as lightweight as advertised - on my 250R it weighed slightly more than stock.

The rotating mass of the axle is neglegible anyways - the mass is all centered near the point of rotation - you'd get much more result out of a set of lighter weight tires.

Back to the axle-- weight is not what they claim, strength is not good (they have a history of breaking), hubs still come loose - better yet - when they do, instead of just loosening up, they loosen up, shear the drive pin, and leave you stranded with a detached tire/wheel -- and although they are advertised as being very adjustable they are such a pain in the @$$ to adjust that it's not worth messing with.

You also have to remember that Durablue's "Lifetime" warranty only works once --- you bend or break the axle, you get a replacement but without any further warranty.

Take it from someone who has owned one (and an RPM, a Lonestar, and numerous others) ---- cancel your X-33 order.

Get a Lonestar - cheaper than an RPM and very, very good -- especially their 450R axle, it's practically as thick as an X-33 (doesn't taper much at the ends) yet isn't hollow - looks and performs great.

There's a reason you don't see many X-33 axles on top racer's quads.

I hate to sound so negative, but I bought one a few years ago thinking I was buying "the best", only to find out what I posted above the hard way - pretty disappointing experience.

I have heard this from some people, but didnt know them. I hear it from you and im looking for rocky mountains number, lol. But which one is better, RPM or lonestar?

I noticed lonestar is adjustable to 3 inches. How much do dominator 2's cost? There website isnt updated, how much do they adjust?

I would say RPM is the best, but you should also look at the TEAM axle. A lot of guys are liking those, and they have a lifetime warranty. Besides that you can get the axle and rear hubs for the price of a RPM.

how much is an RPM?

Dave400ex

Baldwin lists them at $509, but you might be able to find one for around $450. The TEAM is $400 for the axle, and you have to buy the $100 hubs also.

I have an RPM in my 400EX - nice axle.

I have a Lonestar in my 450R - nice axle as well.

The Lonestar on the 450R is "beefier" looking than either a RPM or a Lonestar on a 400EX. The Lonestar is adjustable 1.5" on each side (I haven't measured the axle's base width to see if it's +3 overall) - with a set of 5/3 offset 8" wheels with 18" turf tamers the rear measures roughly 49.5".

Both the Lonestar and RPM use very similar looking small clips to retain the sprocket hub --- Durablue uses a large clip & that's usually where they break (most likely due to the larger groove that must be machined out of the axle).

So far, no complaints with either axle. I've been told that Lonestar is a little easier to work with on the warranty than RPM & the company I went thru said they had fewer warranty claims with the Lonestar axles they've sold - but I haven't had to use the warranty on either axle yet so I can't really say.

I was able to pick up a brand new Lonestar for three bills, which I thought was an excellent price considering I've seen them for over $400 at a lot of places ---best prices I found on the RPM axle were over $400.

I don't have any experience with the Team axles (unless there is truth to the rumor that they make some of the OEM axle out there).

BTW - to prevent loose hubs use some silicon RTV on the splines - you'll never have to replace worn out hubs and/or axle again.

Sparky, I hope your dad is doing well. The next time you go to Haspin shoot me a PM, I might be able to meet up with you all. All my friends have kids and/or married, so its hard finding people to ride with.

i had a x33 axle a few years ago and it snapped in 2 pieces off a big uphill double, it broke right where the clip goes for the antifade, I run lonestar now but they bends easily .

Check with C&D for a price on the RPM. At one time they told me $430.

BTW i ordered the lonestar today, cheapest i found was 369 shipped. I hope it doesnt bend on me. Ive never owned a quad that i havent bent an axle on. Today a guy at moto joes told me the lonestar very rarely bends or breaks.....but he also said the RPM was 2X as strong:huh ...thats really hard for me to believe. If its 2x as strong it seems like it would be more prone to breaking instead of bending. I also ordered the posi-lock lock nut for it.

Durablue axles are JUNK. Thoughtlessly engineered. Anyone own an axle where the lock nut and hubs stay tight?

That drag strip at Haspin is dangerous. You are going so fast at the end and there is always traffic down there and it's bumpy so it's hard to slow down.
