Is anyone else out there make a 12:1 compression piston for the 450. I've been waiting on the Sparks piston for over a month now and get the same story every time I call them... call back in a couple of weeks. I just spoke with someone else there and now they told me it will be about 6 more weeks till they expect them. Who else makes a pump fuel piston for this bike? Is it comparable to the Sparks/JE piston? How much is it and where can you buy it. Thanks.

try to call je directly, also have you checked with wiseco?

No, I was going to check Weisco, but hadn't done it yet. I am somewhat hesitant to deal with JE directly since the whole reason that it is taking Sparks so long to get theirs out was that they had to continually send them back to JE to have them re-worked.

I have been getting the same story from Sparks on their 12:1 piston too. I called on Monday, and they said 1-2 weeks. If you heard 6 weeks since then......

guys for motors u MUST go to rage ATV for 450r motors. They do some guys motors around here and they are RIPPIN!! Dee, the owner, says with the pistons and cams and head port and polish that he has now, he is putting out 57HP!!!!! with just that and not even a carb because on a dyno, a bigger carb will not increase horsepower and will only improve throttle response...www.rageatv.com e-mail him he responds fast and get his phone#.

12:1 = you must use race gas or at least a 50/50 mix with premium. My experience with the 12:1 in my bike was that it detonated alot with the straight pump and even a little with the mix. You neeed to run the mix bare minimum though...

im am not sure how the ratios run from je to weisco... but what would be the highest i could get from either company and still be able to run 93.. and not have it detonatin.. and still have a reliable motor out of it..... thanks

You can usually get away with 12:1 on pump gas as long as you use an aggressive cam. Something like the HRC,Sparks,Stage II Hotcams, ect.

heres my setup,, i was wanting to run the 12:1 piston from je... (sparks).... i got the hotcams stage two, waiting for a piston before i put the cam in... i also have a full comp series yoshimura tri-oval.. i was just wanting to know whats about the highest compression ratio i could go to and get by without any problems with my setup,, thanks

ok i called weisco directly today, they have a 11.5:1 in stock.. and i was thinking isnt the yfz's... 11.9:1 stock.. the 11:5:1 is about what i would want,, the service rep said i could prolly most likely run 93 in it.. they said its trile and error though. why couldnt they give me a solid answer..

anyways i was wanting to know the opinions of some people on here.. could i run the 11.5:1 with pump gas..?????

my setup is hotcams stage two.. yoshi exhaust.. and no airbox lid.. and jet kit.. i am really wanting to be able to trail ride my bike to thats why i am so set on pump gas... so do you guys think that i could pull it off like that.. please i need so good info.. does anyone have the 11.5:1 setup??

I dont have any compression piston in I would like to know if I got a 12:1 piston if i could run pump gas do u guys think so....?

I have been running 91 octane in my Dale w/ a true 12.5-1 piston for 9 months.. I am at 4500 ft elevation so I lose about 1.5 in compression.. At sea level you could get away w/ 40% race 60% pump.. Compression is compression no matter what the machine.. At your 6-7000ft in Wyoming your fine w/ pump gas....

Sandgod is right.
Another factor, is valve overlap: your cam profile will alter the compression of the engine as well. A bigger lift cam, will actually drop the static compression a bit, because the valves are open longer & farther than stock.
I have no problem with a 12:1 Z400 on pump gas (it has bigger cams)

ok thanks cause im going to order me the Sparks cam and the 12:1 piston im going to switch out my HRC cause i would like more low end. So u guys are saying im going to lose compression at my elavation? thanks

When you raise your compression you will get more low end. If you switch to a different cam, you may be disappointed with the overall results & you will likely raise your fuel requirements.

Big cams like more compression - I'd try it first, go from there...

how come bikes can run pump gas at 12:1-13:1

well i live in the app.. mountains.. and my elevation runs from about 600ft.. to about 2500,, so basically anywhere i go, i can run pump gas.. with the 11.5:1 comp. piston right??:eek2:

i don't think i would wast my money on a 11.5/1 piston. isn't stock 10 ro 10.5? not worth the little jump. if you endup needing more octane in fuel just dump a bottle of boost in your tank and go should take care of it.

are u sure it would be a little diff? its the only size weisco offers thats bigger except for 13:5:confused:

I just put a JE 11.5:1 piston and stage II HotCam in my 450R tuesday and it made a considerable difference. JH Racing out of Owasso, Oklahoma did all the work and Johnny said I didnt need to run race gas with the 11.5:1 which is what I wanted. I have no issues with the mods I made, except it rips now!

The power delievery seemed to change, at least to me. Before, most of the usable power was 3rd-4th gear for me on most of the MX tracks here. 1st and 2nd gear were just a little bit too torqy. But now, 2nd - 4th gear really rips. It pulls a lot harder in 2nd - 3rd gear particulary. I am very happy.

I havent got to race with the new mods yet, only practice so I'm anxious to see how the bike runs off the start for the holeshot.

The bike is still very easy to start even with the higher compression which it isnt much of a jump. It does run a little bit hotter but its also been 95-100 degrees here in Oklahoma.
