Yes we did check the oil when it was hot. When we checked it it was no oil on the dipstick. What could be wrong with it.

just keep the oil around the full mark on the dipstick. you can try changing brands of oil and you may not use as much. 400ex's have a tendency to use a little bit of oil when ran hard. i went to mobil 1 and haven't had a problem since.

The 400 gets hot and, to me, regular motor oil just doesn't cut it. I also use Mobil1 with the red cap. Make sure you are checking th oil correctly. Idle for 5 mins and then check it without screwing in the stick. If its low, add oil until full. Heck, you may as well change the oil. It will hold 2 qts.... with a filter change and you may or may not have to crank it to get the last bit in.

Just FYI, when I used regular oil, it ticked whenever it got hot... and it still does if it gets REALLY hot. Otherwise, when I first start it, it may tick for a second and then its the typical 400 purr...

when you check oil, let the engine idle for about 5 mins without touching the throttle, blipping the throttle will make you get a low reading. So will riding wheelies.

On my 440ex the piston pin hole is ovaled out. The extra clearance was causing the motor to make a tapping sound. After some time, the tap noise started to turn to a knocking noise. After investigation I found out that I need a rod/crank combo.

Ouch! Glad you caught it before it grenaded itself!

Man that sucks. We talked to my friend and he said it is my timing chain and tensioners. So we are going to try that.
