Guys
I am pretty new to this and I need someone strong advise someone with experience preferably about 14t sprockets. I have the following completed on my 2002 300ex : k&n power kit, FMF mega max II exhaust and 22X11x9 realtors on douglas red labels in the rear. The realtors are great but I have to admit one thing thet grip to good. That is why I am putting on the rear new fast trekkers 20x11x9 because I want to have some fun like fish tailing and 360's. But I am just confused on if I should change the front sprocket. I see alot of people on this web site have changed there front sprocket to a 14t and have gotten to many different opinions that is why I am being so thorough to get a real answer. I mostly ride in sand pits, dirt tracks and light trails (no rocks or major stumps). PLEASE HELP ANSWER THE MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION ?

personal preferance.... look at it this way, its 20$ try it out and if you dont like it just sell it for 15 or sumpthing, its not like its new tires or anything, just give it a try

What is you rinput on it ? what type of set up do you have ? Is it similar to mine?

I run 14-36 with 20inch out back, it sure does take awhile to get to top speed

This may sound stupid but what is the stock sprocket?
Someone is telling me that the stock sprocket with the 20's should be fine and that I only should put the 14t front sprocket when i HAVE THE REALTORS on ? What do you think ?

It's not the money I just want to know what the heck is the benefit or the down side from stock to a 14t sprocket and I like the top now. I just what a more of kick when I am going thru dirt/sand :)

Get the tires first. If you drop the tires size down two inches it should be good. I think what you're referring to with people talking about 14t sprockets, is people with a 400ex. A 400ex has 15 teeth stock, and a 300ex has 13. So, if you want to have alot of bottom-end power, you want to move down a tooth. For you that would be a 12t sprocket, not a 14. If you want to have more top speed, then get the 14tooth. I put one on my 300 (a 14t) and I liked it alot.. I still had plenty of low-end power. Buuut.. I think I might've had 18'' tires..not 20.
So get the tires, try them out.. THEN decide if you want more low end grunt or a higher top-speed.

I'm not sure what size sprocket the 300ex's come stock with but if you go down one tooth you should pick-up more torque but a lower top-speed.....fast trekkers aren't going to make you be able to do 360's tho. They bite pretty hard maybe you should get Holeshots or Turftamers or maybe even Razr's if you want to do the fishtails. The Realators could be the things slowing you down. That is alot of tire to spin.

You are probably right about the realtors because you feel them like slowing you down. But you don't know either what stock is huh ?

stock is 13tooth and 39tooth back

the stock gearing is 13/38 stock tires are 22s going to 14/38 and 20 inch tires would just about be like running stock

So from what I gather here guys a 12t front sprocket would do what I am looking for?

Taller rear tires =higher top end speed, less low end power. Just the opposite for shorter tires. I dropped one tooth on the front sprocket, everything else stock size. I lost about 5-8 mph on top end, but the increased low end power will almost throw you off the seat.

When I had a set of Realtor tires I found that they and other tires of that tread type grip to good for general riding. To solve this take the tires and run them(switch sides) backwards. Instead of gripping ,now they will flot on top of the ground almost like a regular tire. I used to have a 250X with a 14/39 and some times I would run a set of Woolyburgers(spelling) backwards when it got muddy.

I have a set of 22 inch holeshots on the rear and 23 inch holeshots on the front of my 400, I dropped to a 14 on the front. Can't tell any difference. Will still run right with a stock 400. With the 22 inch tires and the stock gearing it was geared a little too high. While everyone was climbing hills in 2nd I was using 1st. But I love the extra ground clearance especially at Uwharrie:p

I had realtors w/ a 14tooth front. it works awsome as long as you knew how to work the clutch good.
1. you could spin in loose gravel
2. it had a good broad powerband
3. didnt have to shift as much
4. first gear was usuable(stock gearing is too low i feel)
5. realtors just grab when you need it.AWSOME TIRES

now i have some 20inch turftamers for the spring and summer and i am still running 14/38Rebel Gear Sprockets. they are awsome. It feels a lil higher than stock gearing and still works good. hope this will help you.

Dude,
I thought that the 300ex comes with a 13t front sprocket why did you go up a tooth with realtors on the back? I thought you are supposed to go down a tooth with bigger tires in the rear ? Now I am really confused I just ordered a 12t from rocky mountain to test it out. and I think I shouldn't have I am only looking to better the performance when I have the realtors on not when I get the 20 trekkers on because I understand that the smaller tire with the stock sprocket will compliment it well. So I think.

I am still confused if you want top speed or acceleration??

03-20-2002, 05:49 PM
:D ACCELERATION PLEASE :)

You ordered right. Dropping down to the 12 tooth will give you better acce?? How do you spell acceleration?:D
