I notice a hollow scratching noise coming from my 400 when im in 1st, and nuetral. It sounds like the piston is scratching becuase its not lubricated. Could it be the oil pump? too much oil, too little?

i don't know if we're talking about the same thing, but the 400ex gives off a weird noise. i mainly notice it in the lower gears or neutral after riding for just a minute or two. i don't know if it is the oil pump or what, but all the 400ex's do it that i have heard.

I know the sound your talking about, its like a swirling/whining sound.Mine does it to. The sound I'm talking about seems like it might be in relation to that but im not sure. Any other ideas?

ive always wondered what that noise was, i think it sounds like air bubbles or cavitation in the oil system.

So this noise just started recently? Does it happen just after startup or after its been driven for a bit. The whirly noise is def normal, mine has done this on startup since the day I got it. About a month ago I noticed that after hard ridin, at idle I would get alot of valve noise when the motor was real hot. I switched from Honda's cheap oil to Amsoil 10w40 and it hasnt done it since. The motor runs much smoother and quieter now. What year is your 400? Better yet, how many hours are on it?

Its a 2003 with about 200 hours on it. I just noticed it yesterday. It not real loud, but noticable. I believe it does it from start up.Could it be a low oil level? I dont notice any difference in power, but I dont want to wait untill something bad happens to figure it out. thanks for all the responses, keep em comming
