I am a recent owner of a 1988 250R, I am looking at a backup motor for it. So could a 1988 or 1989 CR250 motor be used?

Are the motor mounts the same?
I am under the assumption that I would have to put a TRX250R cylinder on it to get the proper pipe connection, is a CR 250 motor compatible with a TRX cylinder?

The reason why I want to do this is because I see a lot of older CR’s around for little money and TRX motors are big bucks.

Thanks
-Marc

the biggest problem will not be the motor mounts or pipe, that can be easily adjusted withought too much work. your problem will be that the CR is not counterballanced (not a big problem with a 250) but still will be more vibration. and biggest problem will be gearing, remember a CR engine is designed to spin a 3 inch wide tire. your R is spinning 2 11in. tires. even if you re-gear. youll still have a very weak transmition. old CR cylinders will bolt on to R cases though. and bottom ends on the R's are pretty tough. i wouldnt worry about a spair engine.

I am thinking of getting a spare motor too, but I am not using a cr250 motor because as blacker said its not counterbalanced and it will rattle your teeth out. Stick with a trx250r motor.

don't be fooled that 250 will vibrate more than you can believe. it'll crack your frame too. first hand experience. stay away from the CR motor
