First read my sig......... Now then, I am wondering which way to go, build the 300ex I already have some more (big bore, cam, headwork, better exhaust, etc.) or should I pawn it and get a 400ex. I am leaning towards a 400ex just because they fit my size better but I figured I would get some input first.

What are you trying to get out of performance? overall....

Higher top speed, I guess. Dune riding primarily, but I do some trail riding. I like the torque my 300ex has, but I don't know how it stacks up against the 400ex. I haven't rode the dunes yet, but I used to go up to Silver Lake Sand Dunes here in MI probably twice a month when I had my truck, and having a quad will be now different. My reason for concern is the guys I ride with have a banshee and a raptor and a couple of dirt bikes.

Its all up to you, i have two choices you can think about....

1. Big bore your 300 to a 330ex and do the works cam, piston, head porting, and preferably a carb. My brother in law did that to his and he kept up to me when i had just a piped and filtered 400ex.

-or-

2. Like i said up there depending if you had money left over after buying a 400ex, put a pipe and filter on it for starts. just my 2 cents.

r your friends just leaving you in the dust or what?

I'd be willing to bet your 300ex doesnt heve as much torque as a 400ex. save your money and buy a 400 and mod it to beat your friends.

if you have the money buy the 400ex, hes right if their bikes are close to stock you mod the 400 to beat them!

I dont understand why peoples waste their money to build a 300ex when you can get a 400ex. 300ex has been made for children or young teen. 400ex is a full size atv.

Moded 300ex for the price of a 400ex stock? I prefere the 400ex.

i'd say go with the 400, the difference between the 2 is unbelivable

a piped, filter and jetted 300ex is tapped out in 5th when I am at the top of 3rd. I hit 4th and I am gone. I would say go with the 400ex, you will be much happier;)

buy the 400. my wife bought me a 300ex and i was a complete novice. now i race and wish i had the cash to buy a bigger quad. i grew out of it within a year. i'm 6foot a 180lbs, the 300 is for a kid.but i would be interested in your 300 parts. i want to get more out of mine.

Well then its unanimous. I'm glad too, I am getting smoked hard by my friends. On the trail, by the time I peak 3rd I can't see them any more. Don't get me wrong now, I like my 300ex, it was what I could afford and available when I was in the market. And let's face it, I would rather be the slowest guy ON the track rather than not being able to be on the track at all.

you say its pointless to buy a 300ex because of the 400ex but now a lot of people are saying its pointless to buy a 400ex since now you can buy a 450R . dont get me wrong the 400ex is a really awsome machine and i love it but if your gunna buy new just spend the extra $1000 dollars and get the 450.(depending on what type of riding you do)

ok 3 points to make
1. a full 330 built 300ex by a good builder will tear a 400ex with a pipe..... full 330s are fast
2. the money to make the 300 a FULL 330 would cost about 2500-3500, if u sell the 300 for 2500 and u had the 2500 to build a motor like that, thats 5000 dollars u can go get a race ready 400ex, 250r, whatever or put it towards a 450r....

This question to me truely comes down to do you want/need reverse? I've put a lot of money into my 300. A pair of 20" rear tires, HMF, no lid and a good filter and jetting, I've got the torque of the 400. My 300 has a lot of punch down low. This comes at a big cost, top end. Jumps I hit in 4th gear, the 400 does in 3rd. Tight stuff where the 400 runs 1st and 2nd, I'm in 3rd and 4th. I got a chance to ride a 400 today, for about 20 minutes straight. It wheelies about the same as my 300 but a gear lower. Seeing a trend here? The 400 is topping out around 65. I'm lucky to hit 52. A 300 can be built to run with 400's but it comes at a cost. If I had the chance start over again, I would have gotten a 400 about a month after having the 300, but I have a nice 300, a great trail machine and it competes in C class harescrambles. If you actually read all that I'm suprised, the suspension alone is worth every penny on the 400 compared to the 300. Go for it, you can't beat the price these days of a good used 400ex. ;)

You could do like me...

I got the 300EX when I was a kid. Now I'm older, so I'm building a sleeper out of it. Built properly, a race-prepped 300EX will run circles around a 400EX. I've seen a warmed over Mojave smoke Banshees. It's all in your ability to build a motor and/or select a motor builder.

Personally, I'm looking forward to the looks people's faces are going to have on them. It's not like my 300 owes me anything at this point, so I have no reason to sell and start over. If I did, I'd be buying a new 450 from Yamaha.

I would keep the 300. I have one that's got some mods to it and i will outrun any 400 that is stock or has and exhaust. As long as you know how to build it up right then you will outrun most of any 400's. My friend has a 400ex with Whit Bros E-Series exhaust and i will outrun him anyday. Reverse also comes in handy.

300ex
dg exhaust
dg front bumper
jet kit
k&n filter
15 tooth front sprocket

If those are the only mods you have to your motor, bring it.:huh

 quadmaster, i think the parking brake musta have been dragging on the 400 you race against. how much power do you think a dg exhaust and jet kit/filter really add? not 100cc's worth!

as far as 300extasy's question, there is another option. go to powroll's website and check out the 250x-350x conversion. it will work on your 300ex too. a new "crate" 350x motor can be had for 750-1000 depending where you look ( from when they were cutting up trikes). the powroll exhaust is expensive, but if you are crafty, you can modify the stock 350x header to work (that's what i did). i built 2 of these, and they fly. if you are small and you like the way your 250x/300ex handles (or if you have already hopped up the suspension), i definately recommend this.(especially as an alternative to building a finiky high compression 300ex). the kid that rides one of the ones i built is a great rider, and i have to pedal pretty hard to catch him on my 400. just my 2 cents. otherwise, get the 400ex. you should be able to find one that hasn't been molested for under 3 grand. enjoy, you sound like a good guy, you know you're lucky to even have a quad-

That's what I was thinking, a stock 300ex has what 15 hp and weighs 377 lbs, and a stock 400ex has about 27 hp and weighs 375 lbs. Your telling me a pipe and filter add 12 plus horse power to a 300ex? Right.

that would be fine and dandy if your small, but it's not a 300ex. I guess it would be a 350ex, and I dont know much about the 350x, but comparing the two, I believe the 350 has much more potential. That sounds bad, and could prob kill most 300's:rolleyes:

the 350x trikes were rockets, they were just unsafe (hence many were destroyed). like i said, a good rider on one of these 350ex hybrids will put up a good fight against a 400, especially if you've already sunk a ton of loot into your 300ex's suspension. one thing worth mentioning, the 350x was kick start and obviously no reverse. if you can deal with these things, this is an affordable way to reliably go really fast on a budget (can't beat stock honda reliability). if you're not too handy with a wrench, buy a clean 400ex. good luck:devil:
