View Full Version : Has your dog ever had "Cold water syndrome"

05-10-2004, 11:42 AM
Just curious if any of you dog owners, mainly labs, ever experienced cold water syndrome, or limp tail syndrome before with your dog.

This weekend I was at the lake and Rico jr of course took a swim in the lake for the first time this year. Water temp is about 55 degrees or so. Well last night he woke me and the wife up at 2 AM because he just couldn't get comfortable. After getting up and thinking he needed to go outside which he never does during the night, I noticed he was walking with his tail down (limp) which it never is. His tail is always wagging when he's not asleep and upright when he walks. Well after thinkin something was really wrong and worrying about it till 5 AM I started to do some research on the net. Come to find out the cold water, swimming and him overly using his tail, due to shaking the water off, that he has sprained it. It's almost like it's paralyzed and looks to be very uncomfortable for him..:(

anyone else ever have this happen to their dog and if so how long did it take for him to get back to normal???

He might just need some of your limp tail medication:D

You go for a swim in 55 deg water. I am sure your thingy won't be at attention either.

Our chocalate lab had it once. We took her to the vet and they gave her a cortizon shot and it fixed it right up.

05-10-2004, 12:56 PM
From what I've read on dog forums and google searches it could last a few days or a week or 2..:(

I'd take him to the vet but I don't think they really would do much besides take money for an office visit and maybe give me some $40 painpills or something.

The info I"ve gotten from searching the web all day is baby asprin and several days of pamperin and no ruff playing...:)

Hey Rico, sorry to hear about the your dog. I did some research also, here is what I found, maybe you already have seen it. It says that he should return to normal in 2-3 days.

My lab had that happen last fall the vet said just leave it and after about 5days he was fine.He also ripped a toenail off that was nasty.

You could try giving him Viagra... should perk it right up!

I don't think any of my dogs have had this, but my one dog Beamer sometimes walks with his tail down. He is a very hyper happy dog, so whenever I see him with his tail down I just say "put that tail up" and he will put it up and start to shake it again...

LMAO @ LT...:blah:

Gillbilly and cleatus??

Was there much swelling in his rear-end area or at the base of the tail and his butt??

Wife just called and said it appears he has some swelling since this morning..:( Of course she's freakin out and that it's not the cold tail syndrom, and I'm still thinkin it is.

Looks like we'll be going to the VET when I get home..

When I was readin this...I was worried your doggies tail was gonna fall off:eek2: Until I read further down...because one of our old great danes...he had his tail jammed in a door I think it was and it went right limp and it wouldn't move...then it..(this sounds gross) rotted off:huh :eek2: ...and he was left w/ a stump. This was a long long time ago. But luckily that isn't gonna happen to your dog! Hope he gets better soon:)

Yeah that would be a smart choice if it's swelling. It could be anything from a bee-sting to something wrong like an infection I guess, let us know how it turns out for the pup.

Well, all kidding aside, they say the dog holding it's tail down can be a sign something is wrong. I've spent a lot of money on my dog in vet bills over the years, sometimes for nothing. But I really like the dog, so I guess i paid for peace of mind. Yep, you'll be going to the vet tonight. ;) Hope it's ok.

Happened to my lab once. A little Ibueprophin (sp) is about all you can do. It took Zeus about 1 week to be back to normal.

Some viagra might help that limp tail, Ive never heard of this happening to dogs but hope rico Jr feels better.

:(

Just got back from the VET. He has 2 compressed disk in his back and is to do NO activity for 3 weeks. If he does it's possible he could paralyze himself..:(

That sucks, I wonder how it happened. Never heard of a dog getting compressed disks.

Guess your sleeping on the floor and the dog in the bed?

I was told "Don't give your dog Ibeoprofin! It can stop their heart!"

My chocolate lab will swim if the water is not frozen and he uses his tail as a rudder. If its really cold he gets in and out about 50 times but normally you can't get him out.But he's never had a problem other than broncitus. Please get your dog to the vet just for all of our peace of mind. I'm told you can give your dog asprin Its best to give 1/2 a genaric asprin. That helps a lot with the pain. I really hope he is OK, Good luck

Deisil is right, Ibuprofin is not for dogs. But our vet reccomends childrens asprin all the time.
Rico I hope your dog gets better soon.

Get well soon Rico Jr!!!

My pup doesn't have a tail! Not even a nubbin! They docked her really short. Plus she won't go NEAR water so I am guessing I won't ever have this problem.

But hope your pup gets well soon!

That really does suck,my kids dog had the same prob with the disks. He did it when he jumped up to catch a ball and landed on his azzend. The worse part was it was about half way thru duck season before we could take him out, drove him and us crazy.Hope all goes well, the boyz dog is 100% now far as we can tell.

05-11-2004, 06:53 AM
Well his tail is OK and will be it's the compressed disk in his back are in so much pain that wagging his tail is like running on a sprained ankle.. OUCH

He's moving around but very slowly. I've had to tear a bed down in the spare bedroom so the matresses are on the floor which will keep him from jumping. He sleeps with us every night so now we gonna be taking turns sleeping in the spare bed with him and will for the next 3 weeks. Kinda funny that I just got married and we won't be sleepin together for 3 weeks. LOL

All in all I can tell the medication is helping because he was in a better mood this morning and seemed to be moving a little better. I've had 2 compressed disk myself so I know all too well the pain he's going thru. He's locked in the spare room today while were at work which I hope goes OK. He doesn't stay inside while were at work because after all he is a lab and likes to chew up any and everything...:eek2: I think he's just gonna lay on the bed and watch TV though. Not really in shape to be tearin anythign up so I'm not too worried. If he does Ole well, I"d rather have some things tore up than have a hurt dog..:)

Glad to hear it sounds like you got it all worked out. It's gonna be tough to keep him still when he starts to feel better, but it's for the best. Good luck and I'm sure he'll be back to normal in a few weeks.

Rico, He will try to move way before he is well. you may want to consider a crate until he is healed completely. put him in the crate when you guys are not around. THat way he cant do anything stupid and re-injure himself. Oh yeah. If you crate him, make sure to take his collar off so he wont hang himself in the crate. happens all the time and that is NOT something you want to come home too. I know how you feel though. I have stayed up a few times when my Jack Russel was sick. We spare no exspense. lol

05-12-2004, 06:04 AM
Well his tail is moving A LOT more and he's getting around better. I think the medication is helping and us keeping him confined to one room and not letting him run around like an idiot. I think he'll make a full recovery but keeping him calm is like making a 4 year old sit in a chair for hours on end.....:eek2:

Our Black Lab just got over it there was a little swelling at the beginning of the tail and she was fine in about two to three days.

Did nothing but make her comfortable.

Ouch!!! Very Sorry to hear that... :(

Well he just took a bad turn and now is back at the vet. They are keeping him because he can't keep anything down that he eats or drinks. They don't really think it's the medication but are doing some blood work to find out what exactly it is. I"m gonna drop my weekend race money at the vet this week i think...:( The wife done laid the law down and said if he doesn't get better by tomorrow morning no GNCC race for me. Not that the race is more important than the dog but i'm really wanting to run enough races to compete for points which right now i'm only 2 spots out of the top 10. Not bad for only running 3 races out of 7..

I'm sure everything will work out for the best. Hopefully it's just a reaction to the medication.

well the wife called and said they think it might be pancreaitis (sp?) which is common in 2-3 year old labs that are under stress, been given cortizon, or have bad diets that have lots of fat content.. He gets Iams food and has for years so I'm guessin it's the medication..
