Winch on 400EX

Wondering if anyone has done this? I have the winch and will be putting it on this week..... Just wondered if anyone had tried it and if so where you attached it.

I am thinking about using a reciever hitch type set up so it could come off easy.... I am also wondering how the extra 13 lbs will affect the handling.... maybe it will help keep the front end down...:p anyway just wondering....

Why do you want to put a winch on your 400???


I have seen one mounted on a 300ex....they mounted it right behind the front bumper and bolted it to the frame. I am sure it will work on the 400

Dude until you have driven off a trail following your buds on bikes don't bad mouth the idea..... I was lucky that we were able to get a truck to where I went off the trail to pull me back out. In addition to that there have been several mud holes that have suprised me :eek2: and I am getting to old to work that hard to get myself out......

Remember the key is to work smarter not harder...... but hey if we ever meet and your stuck just remind me that you don't need my winch..... :rolleyes:

I ride with a guy that has one on his 300ex. He just welded mounts to the frame and it works great. He jumps and rides wheelies and everything, he says he cant notice it.

Also he doesnt use it for mud and stuff, he uses it around the house pullin fences and stuff. So even though its a sport, it works fine for a lot of stuff

i saw on tv a couple weeks ago that a company (i think it was Warn) came out an atv winch specifically for sport quads. it was lighter and more compact to fit in tight places like behind the front bumper, but still able to get the job done for the lighter bikes. i think i saw it on speed channel or espn when they did a special on SEMA and visited the Warn booth.

i dunno if id put a winch on my quad, I had one on my old big bear it was great for the utility, i also had a plaw so i used the winch for the plow, My brok crashed his quad off a cliff once he was ok but his quad was pretty far down in a tree the winch pulled it right out:D I want a utility soo bad again

Yes, it is WARN that is making the new winch for the sport quads. The show one on a Raptor but don't show any listings for brackets for a 400EX. Maybe they are in works or something. At times it would be nice to have a winch.

I have never done it, but it would work the same as on a utility quad. You would have to fab up some brackets, but it would work just fine.

I saw a guy at the gas station the other day with one on his Z400. Has it mounted to the frame uprights behind the front bumper so the cable leads out through a fairlead mounted on a PRM baja bumper. He says he has only used it twice in two years, but both times were when there was no other way to get the quad back up to the trail.

Warn sells the 1.5i winch wich is made for spart quads, I belive they also sell a bracket to mount it to the frame right behind the bumper with U bolts.

I have had my 400 in water up to the exaust ports. I would be interested in the winch. It would be bad arse at the races too. lol
