I am moving up from a 250ex to a 400cc+ quad, my riding areas are mostly trails and open pasture land. I have narrowed my choice to either the 400ex or Z-400, I pretty much decided the 450cc racers are not what I need (I want to be able to cruise around some not WFO all the time). Can anyone give me any opinions that have owned one or both? I really like the honda but a liquid cooled engine with OHC and reverse seems like an upgrade over the honda? Please help!!!

You can go with a 450 and not run it hard all the time. From what I have seen the new 450's that everyone is putting out are the way to go rite now.
If you think that you have to have an EX or a Z I say go with the Z. They have a lot better ride. Especialy if you drap a Z a few inches. The EX's are a little too top heavy in my openion.

I'm in the same situation as you. I ride only trails and i want a 400ex or a z. I'd say if you really need reverse, then get the z400. I dont have reverse on my blaster now, so its not a big deal. I'm probably going with the 400ex

The 400EXs are the best handling machines, with the best ergonomics (IMO, I don't like the feeling of the Z/KFXs, they sit too high). The Z/KFX are a little quicker, but the 400EXs are much more reliable (and the frame doesn't suck). It's kind of a tradeoff. With the 400EX you get an extremely reliable, well handling machine, and with the Z/KFX you get a little more power and speed, and reverse.

definetly z400 or kfx400.

Thanks for the info, it will help with the decision. I definately like that the z has more power, but the ex seems to be be easily upgraded in power. Does the ex remain as reliable once the displacement is increased?

go with the ex.;) much cheaper and more reliable. and the z/kfx with the new "stronger" frame isnt as strong....just ask overkillkfx.....his friend's subframe has a bend in it each side at about the middle.

For the price of a Z400 you could buy yourself a nice EX and throw some decent shocks on it and have yourself a nice trail rider. Although, Z's seem to respond better to mods.
