I really don't know if this thread belongs here but I finally rode my 400EX. I traded for it last week. I didn't really want it but I figured I could sell it pretty easy if I wanted too. The guy that I got it from said it was a 416 and had some head work done. I thought, yeah whatever. It also has a Yoshimura full system and an unlimited rev CDI. Anyway I took it for a spin today and was very impressed with the power. I always thought 400EX's were kinda mild. (I've never been on one untill today) I've raced a bunch of 'em. I don't know if I want to sell or not now. Would these few mods really make that much difference, or was I just underestimating the 400EX in general? What is a 416 anyway? Is it just an overbore or a big bore kit or what? I don't know jack about 400EX's. Anyhow I have a little more respect for them after today.

glad to see antoher happy conversion. Anyway a 416 kit is a bore on the stock sleeve most likely. It has a new piston, rings etc. The main bores are 416, 426 (biggest on the stock sleeve.) and a 440 which u must get it resleaved and if it goes out u have to get it resleeved again. personally i think the 416 is the best goin. U still have room for one more bore if somtin goes wrong and it puts out nice power. Good luck with that.

those few mods would make quite a bit of difference...just the exaugst makes a pretty good difference...a 416 is where u bore the cylinder to make it 416cc

you're wrong, you can over bore on a 440.

I've seen 465EX's and 500EX's so obviously 440 ain't the biggest.

Those are acheived by stroking. Going overbore on a 440, is barely anything, just enough so that it's fresh again.

Yeah, I had heard the 440 sleeve was kinda risky and expensive because you couldn't overbore it, and you had to rebore the sleeve after installing it because it distorts slightly when you press it in. I had also heard that the performance gain between the 416/426 and the 440 was not really that much considering the cost. I really think I'll enjoy this bike. I did notice how low the handlebar vibration was compared to my Raptor and my brothers YFZ. I'm also wondering if the frame geometry is better than the 250R. I have noticed some aftermarket frames have 400EX geometry. I would really like to ride it on the track but my injury (two fractured vertabrae) won't let me. I had a 250R about 3 years ago with Laeger +2's and pretty much everything else that was popular in that time period. I would like to feel the 400EX in comparison to that and my Raptor. I know it would probably handle better than a stock Raptor, but mine is a little better than stock (AKA Pro-Trax). About being converted, sorry, not yet, I know ya'll hate Raptors here but it's still going to be my primary MX ride. Click on the link below and you'll see why. I am considering a 450R in the future. Anyway thanks for the help.
