How hard is it to change the head gasket on my 400ex and would it cost much to be changed by my dealer.How much is a xr 400 gasket.

The hardest part is timing it when you re-assemble it, but it's a piece of cake after you get the feel for it. Definately get a 2nd person for that. What I do is torque the head bolts to spec, wait 2 hours, then retorque them. The gasket that I used is metal and it will squish when you torque it. After it settles in place you retorque it. Other than that it's fairly simple. Just follow the steps in the book and make sure to keep your parts seperate and organized. For the headbolts I take a piece of cardboard, draw an outline of the head cover, and punch holes where each bolt goes. Then I put the bolts in the spot where they match. Each bolt is a different size, so you will never mix them up.
