400ex crankcase problem/question?

when i was down in kentucky on saturday i hit a tree and put a dent in my left crankcase cover (near the front edge) that cracked and created a little hole there. it dumped oil out of it so i shut her down and waited to get towed back. i ordered a new left crankcase cover & gaskets, etc., but when i was looking in the manual i guess the stator assembly is under there? i never took that side of the crankcase apart before, but i was just wondering should it have motor oil in there?? it doesn't look like it in the clymer manual and doesn't seem like that shoudl be filled with oil. is there something else broke in there or what. i don't know i'm no crankcase expert.....i'm just good at hitting trees :D

any help to end my confusion would be appreciated.

yes there is supposed to be oil in there

i just called somebody else and they said the same thing. i just never had it apart before so i wasn't sure.
