After having almost perfect weather for the first six rounds, A raining day was bound to happen anytime, and boy did it rain. Friday Morning the sky opened up and turned the rich Kentucky soil and green grass fields into a monster mud pit.

I arrived Friday Evening at the track entrance to meet a long line of vehicles waiting to get in to park. At first, I thought they were just running out of spots, but after almost getting my motorhome stuck trying to creep up the access road, I quickly realized that it was much worse.

I had my father drive as I went to investigate was we were in for at the front of the line. I was horrified to find them having to hook up to almost every vehicle and tow them to a parking spot.

Luckly, HMF Engineering had a spot perfect for my motorhome right off of the main road, so went for it. With the Help of Mike Chirdon, I was able to plow my way into the spot.

Some others that were in 4x4 trucks and didn't have huge trailers on the rear had a blast flying through the mud to find a park spot on the hill.

Shortly after dark, Racer Productions shut down traffic coming into the track. The local campgrounds, Walmart Parking, and gas stations became home for many that night.

The next morning, after more heavy rain overnight, conditions at the track became even worse. Jason Buchanan attempted to get his truck parking spot, but he became another victim of the mud.

Jason was pulled back through the Pits over to the other parking area.

This guy got word that there was a mud bog going on out in front of Pit Row and brought his truck out to participate.

Not everyone seemed to be bothered by the mud. This group looked as if they were really enjoying themselves.

Admin

Bart Miller knew it was going to be a long day of racing when he got stuck just trying to get to back from tech inspection.

***Also because of the poor conditions, Racer Productions didn't conduct sound or kill switch testing. I am sure that this won't be the case at Rausch Creek***

The ITP Tent was a popular spot for many of the racers who were looking for an aggressive tire for the Muddy conditions. Jim Pinkston assisted customers all day with tire selections for their quads. The New ITP HD tires was the perfect tire for these conditions with its larger lugs and aggressive side bite.

Admin
05-04-2004, 06:32 AM
Last Years Vet Class Champion, Bryan Hulsey, uses the HD tires on his Vforce because the sidewalls don't roll when he is going into a turn on his 400lb+ machine.

Bill Ballance decided to go with the Maxxis iRazr for the Sparta track, which was the same tire he used last year for the first time at Sparta when it was a Proto-type.

Admin

Chris Borich had just raced the prior weekend at the District 6 Race Hurricane Hills and looked awesome from what I heard. He made his first Podium apperance at Loretta's, and I am sure he wanted a repeat performance.

William Yokley and Kim Kuhnle headed to to start at 2PM which was pushed back because of the rough track conditions and cleanup from the morning race.

ITP's Chad Duvall wasn't bothered one bit about the muddy conditions because he has been known for his mud riding skills. Chad has been having great year with the help from his mechanic Ryan and all of his sponsors.

Admin

Andy Lagzdins has been extremely consistant this year after switching to the 450R. Andy also mounted up a set of the HD tires for the muddy conditions.

Admin

Jeff Stoess came flying through the pits without stopping and quickly gained a few spots up to 8th place on the 1st lap.

Brandon Ballance makes the outside pass on Kim Kuhnle heading up the hill.

Admin
05-05-2004, 06:04 AM
By the 2nd lap, Jeff Stoess had taken over the lead with Chad Duvall and William Yokley only a few seconds behind. Todd knippenberg rode flawlessly the 2nd lap and moved up to 4th place from 16th after putting in a lap time that was almost three minutes faster than any other Pro. Unfortunately, Todd's race was ended in the third lap.

Chad Duvall had moved up from 11th to take over 2nd place.

Admin
05-05-2004, 06:06 AM
Greg Trew race almost ended in the 2nd lap when his YFZ axle got wrapped up in a grape vine, which took atleast five minutes to get it free. He dropped from the top five back to 11th by the end of the lap.

Bill Ballance wasn't spared from problems either, He received a flat front tire on the 2nd lap which slowed him down considerably. He made a last minute decision to switch tires which didn't have tire balls and it cost him big after getting the flat. Ballance dropped back to 8th and was several minutes off the leaders.

After a great start, Brad Page was out of the race after 1 lap. He heads back to the pits.

Johnny Gallagher capitalized on others mistakes and moved his way from last to 9th place by the end of lap two. :macho

Admin
05-05-2004, 06:26 AM
Jared Gruca was running in 12th

Admin
05-05-2004, 06:34 AM
Half way through the final lap, Jeff Stoess was still in the lead:macho, and he almost completely took me off guard as he came flying through the lappers.

Jeff Stoess stayed on the gas the entire lap and never got stuck with his new Kenda Tires and Tire Balls, which made all the difference in the world.

Jeff went on to win the Pro Class and take his 1st Overall Victory!!!!

Admin
05-05-2004, 06:39 AM
Bryan Cook put in an incredible ride especially after his YFZ wouldn't restart after heading into the pits at the end of lap two. His Four Stroke Tech team finally got his YFZ started, and he was able to keep it from stalling during the last lap and work his way back up to 4th behind Santo Derisi after falling back to 7th.

Another Excellent race by the Rookie Bryan Cook!!!

Admin
05-05-2004, 06:43 AM
Santo Derisi was grinning ear to ear after finishing third in the pro Class and 5th Overall. He has been struggling all year with his YFZ, but he finally feels like he has his suspension dialed in for his light weight. Santo made his first podium apperance last year at Rausch Creek, so I am sure his is looking for a repeat.

"Santo Phones home to share the Great News"

William Yokley and Matt Smiley both were in the top five heading into the third lap, but they both sucked up by the muddy track, which caused them to lose some valuable time. William Yokley dropped back to 6th and Matt Smiley dropped back to 10th.

Bill Ballance worked his way back up 5th in the last lap after having the fastest last lap of any rider on the last lap. One thing about Bill Ballance is that he never gives up. In Texas, he wrecked hard and dropped back, and he still put in the fastest last lap. His drive to win is incredible, and I commend him for his renlentless effort.

William heads back to the pits in disgust after finishing the race 8th overall. When most riders only wish, they ever could finish a GNCC in the top 10 overall.

Admin
05-05-2004, 06:58 AM
Greg Trew stayed on the gas in the last lap and worked his way back up to 7th.

Admin

Andy Lagzdins had his best pro class finish of the year with 8th place. I guess those ITP HD tires really worked for him because I know they worked for me in the morning.

Admin
05-05-2004, 07:02 AM
Brandon Ballance might not have been very happy about his luck at the Sparta, but he sure didn't loose his sense of humor. The Ballance Brothers are truly a funny pair at times.

Brandon shows me he finished 13th

Chris Borich didn't let his race get him down because he knows that there is always the next round. Chris is a great person and rider, and I know he will be back on the podium before long.

Pro Am

Brian Schmid missed the last couple of races because he broke a few ribs in a none race related injury. His last race at Steele Creek, he finished 2nd in the class and 20th overall. It is great to have him back out there again even though he still wasn't 100%.

Admin

Adam McGill skipped the first three rounds and started his season with Steele Creek.

He gave everyone at EXriders.com a big two thumbs Up!!!

Brent Sturdivant is on EXriders.com Homepage for his win at the Phaesant Farm, but he is also a regular GNCC ProAm rider, but unfortunately for him, his luck hasn't been the best at the Nationals.

Chris Jenks was near the back of the pack heading into turn two with a stream of caution tape wrapped around his head.

Admin
05-05-2004, 12:00 PM
Brent didn't get his TRX450R to start up right away and was the last rider to head into the woods.

Admin
05-05-2004, 12:03 PM
By the end of the 1st lap, Chris Jenks had worked his way through the pack and took over the lead:macho, but Jeremy Rice was only a few seconds.

Admin
05-05-2004, 12:04 PM
Jeremy Rice was running strong only few seconds behind Jenks!

Admin
05-06-2004, 05:44 AM
Jathan Seale was once again in the top three as he powered his 450R up the slippery hill.

Admin
05-06-2004, 05:45 AM
Brent Sturdivant was on the gas trying to make up for his poor start, but he fell victim to the mud in his second lap and was done for the day.

Admin
05-06-2004, 05:47 AM
By the 2nd lap, Bottlenecks were developing everywhere, but unlike tracks in the past, the woods was open enough to find a way around stuck riders.

Admin
05-06-2004, 05:49 AM
After completing two laps, Jeremy Rice was not only leading the ProAM Class, but also was 1st Overall with a ten second lead over Jeff Stoess.

Jason Lewis fault his way through the Mud

Admin
05-06-2004, 05:57 AM
Jason was wishing that I had some water or something to clean his face up after loosing his googles to the mud. This was a typical sight through out the race.

Admin
05-06-2004, 05:59 AM
Brian Schmid didn't fair well in the mud, but I am sure he was glad to just be out racing once again.

Admin
05-06-2004, 06:05 AM
By the end of the final lap, Chris Jenks had taken over the lead after Jeremy Rice was sucked up by the mud and lost some valuable time trying to get going again. Jeremy charged back after Chris, but there wasn't enough time.

Jeremy finished 2nd in the Pro Am Class and 4th overall, which was his best finish of the year. Great Job Jeremy:macho

Admin
05-06-2004, 06:14 AM
Jeff Stoess was Overall Winner at Sparta GNCC!!! The conditions were perfect for Jeff and didn't let his oppurtunity get away. Jeff is one of the fastest riders that I have ever seen in the mud, and he showed everyone that an ATK is a great submarine! Jeff gave alot of credit to his sponsor this year for standing behind him through his career.

Jeff was one of the very first riders to run tireballs when they were being developed last year with Wade Summers/Rod Cooper, and he used them in his new prototype Kenda tires to get traction through the sloppy conditions.

Chad Duvall made his 4th appearance on the Podium this year, and was very thankful to have all the support from his team. He gave alot of credit to his Mechanic Bryan for all his hard work also to AmPro Yamaha, Elka, IMS, ITP, and many other sponsors.

Admin
05-06-2004, 04:35 PM
Marcus was slow to get his 450R started, but once he got it started, he meant business. It is a common sight to see one 450R in everyone row come flying around the turn 10 seconds after the race of the class passes by because of the kick starter.

Tim Lenig was flipped heading into turn one, but he was ok. He gathered his thoughts and remounted his Cannondale and took off after the pack.

Admin
05-06-2004, 05:00 PM
After the 1st lap, Bryan Baker was back in 13th, but he used his Vforces power move up and take over the lead and win the Open A Class!

Admin
05-06-2004, 05:05 PM
Tim Lenig decided to practice his "Nac Nac" freestyle trick while heading through the woods or was he just getting off to push

Regardless, he was definately on the gas. He worked his way from 28th to 9th place after one lap, and he continued his charge all the way up to 3rd with the fastest Open A last lap time.

Great Job Tim!!! Maybe next time you can keep it rubber side down on the start instead of trying a backflip and win.

Admin
05-06-2004, 05:07 PM

The Mud and sloppy conditions took it toll on many of the quads, and this Z400 was no expection with a broken lower balljoint from smacking tree. Steering an ATV at high speed with you front tires full of mud was very interesting at times to say the least.

By the 2nd lap, Shawn moved up to third as he pitted for goggles and gloves, but on the last lap he ran into problems and dropped back to 7th, which still wasn't bad.

Justin Hess found it easier to hoover through the course than to get stuck in the mud.

Some riders which they knew about Justin's hoover technic as they were towed out of the woods with flat tires.

Dave McCarroll used his extensive GNCC experience to take his 300EX to the Win by over 4 minutes over Dustin Pigott.

Joseph Masgarva rode his Blaster to an impressive 3rd place finish.

This Sport Class rider looked like he was on a hunting expedition and needed to camoflage his quad to match the background.

This racer found a barbed wire fence that went along the track, which left some deep slices in his arm. They are going to leaves scares for sure, but he wasn't upset one bit. Luckily it didn't catch the main artery in his neck.

Once the race was over, it was time to head home. Unfortunately, leaving wasn't an easy task for anyone that had parked way off the main access road. Many of the ATV racers were stuck at the course till Mid day Sunday trying to get out.

Jason Lewis's Rig had to be towed out by two 4x4 tractors.

This was an incredible weekend, and I was glad that I was able to be pulled out of their early Saturday evening to head to the Muddy Creek National in TN. The Morning Coverage and GNC coverage is yet to come.

I really don't know who they are either, so I just grab pictures of quads that no one could figure out if I am wrong and throw a name on it  , lol.

Luckily, I have come to know alot of riders over the year and can pickout some with very few clues, but I must say it isn't easy figuring it out, which is why this report took awhile to get finished because I didn't want the mud to prevent me from doing a complete race report for everyone.

Now, I better get crackin on the "Muddy Creek" report before I get in trouble.

Yes great coverage but what does this mean Harlen

(Stephanie became one of his victims after giving her a big hug with his muddy clothes. Stephanie wasn't phased and started laughing. I guess she is sympathetic to slow ones)
