well i would put skid plates first, then some 4 or 6 ply tires, Then the sprocket wouldn't be so bad...depends on how the trails are? windy? rocky? open? what?

i shoulda made myself more clear...when i said stock i ment motor...bought it used off my friend...has 6 ply holeshots all around on douglas rims, nerfs, full ac skids,ac mudscreem bumper, painted red frame, handguards and other little things.i got a good summer job so i dont really need to save the money yet, i was going to get omf or tinners scoops,14 tooth front, gripper seat cover, maybe some renthals...any other suggestions for my $300-$350??

oh yea the trails are pretty tight and windy with straights thrown in,i would like to eventually make it a CC quad, would a 14 tooth front be good for CC?
thanks,any suggestions apreciated!

i would think that the 14t would help on tight trails because of the gain on the low end u can accel quick, but if there are some wide open stretches than i would probly stay with a 15. look at it this way, u can spend like what $15 and buy a 14t and if u dont like it than but put 15t back on and sell the 14t on ebay of somethin and get ur money back.

I use a 14T all the time, love it. It's about 3-4 mph slower, but the accelleration more makes up for it. Great in the woods, can lug all day. Honda has a habit of gearing a bit high quite a bit. With 22inch wheels, running the 14T almost feels stock.

i would deff. say get the 14t...You can always go back or go higher like the others said. I would then upgrade the suspension.

I am not the fastest guy on the trails and I'm not the slowest either.... I tried the 14T, but, to me, it made 1st gear almost unusable. I went back to the stock 15T.

i have a 14 tooth on my 400ex with the other things listed in my signature. i think the sprocket made a big difference. i can holeshot a raptor and predator, for the first 3-4 gear, then they catch up and end up getting ahead of me. but in the trails, it did help alot. ive found that i dont have to downshift as much and it does help for low end.

i got a good renthal 14 tooth for $30 from rocky mountain atv

Go with a 14t sprocket and a Big Gun slip-on pipe. You'll notice the biggest gain in low end and mid range power. I absolutely LOVE my power, I've ridden stock 400ex's, X-6 400ex, and a HMF EX and I love mine.

I ride mostly on tight/more open trails and the 14t works perfectly, awesome low-end grunt and awesome acceleration, I barely notice the loss in top end because I never get into 5th gear on the trails.

On the MX track it works like a dream also because you are never in 5th gear on a track, and you really want the low end power and acceleration.

If you are into wheelies, you will fall in love with this setup also. Just a blip of the throttle brings your front end up and you can keep it up for as long as you want.

If you do any of the above, you will love your choice with the 14t and the Big Gun slip-on really helps a lot, I'm sure the full system would help even more but you said you only had $300-350 so that should work out perfectly.

Let me know what choice you make and how it turns out for you. Good luck, only you can make the right choice that works for you.

maybe you didnt feel it,....but i know i lost some i just thought it was funny how i can go from seeing the tail end of the raptor to being in front of it almost all the way through the race.

raptors are geared high anyways

Has any one tryed a 16 tooth with stock rear sproket or is that to high with a stock engine.

I've been wondering the same thing for along time. I am going to buy a 14 and 16 tooth front to try. Someone told me a while back he had a stock bike and had a 16. he said it gave alot of top end with minimal loss of low-mid.

A 16t sprocket would be too high on a stock motor I would believe, my friend has a 16t with his 416 and that works out just fine, but a stock bore I think would be too little.

Also, about changing to a 15t after putting on a pipe and filter, it all depends on how much torque you want.

I have a 14t sprocket with a Big Gun slip-on which produces awesome low end power, and I could not be happier with how much low end torque it produces. I will never switch to a 15t with my 400ex, unless I got a 416 or 440....but even then I'd be undecided. Works great for trails, MX, and short drags.
