NQRA @ Virginia Beach

This weekend was the Virginia beach round of the NQRA series. There was a decent turn out with riders of all skill levels participating.

The course was built right on the white sandy beach mere yards from the ocean and the ultra popular boardwalk. Towering hotels lined the track giving spectators a wide variety of viewing areas.

Racers of any level could handle the jumps, whoops and other typical obstacles found on any MX track, the greatest obstacle at this race is the sand

Early saturday morning found the workers busily prepping the track before practice. The course was worked after every few heat races to keep the track consistant.

Pit parking was on the beach in the Inlet area and the event stretched from 1st street to 8th street. The Atlantic Ocean made for a spectacular back drop for this event

Series sponsor ATV Sport was on hand filming the event for an upcoming episode of their new television series

Riders wait in line for tech. The event was handled very well from what I could see with staff busily working to make everything run smoothly

Youth riders were first to hit the track for practice. There was a 50cc and a 90cc class with machines that ranged from stock to fully modified competing

Riders off all ages soon had thier chance to feel what the sand would do to them, and thier machines!

The riders await thier turn to hit the track for practice as a healthy sounding boat guns its engines getting the attention of more then a few people!

With the new course, riders were cautious for the first lap then proceeded to get faster and go higher!

This rider sets sail on his Predator as spectators watch from 5 stories up!

With 3 or 4 laps of practice under thier belts, it soon became clear who was going to be the riders to watch during the heat races!

There were some great looking 400ex based machines at this event.

The first turn had 2 seperate lines riders could chose from. During practice riders had the false sense that it would remain smooth!

The mix of talent during practice caused a few tense moments as faster riders met slower ones

"Landing in the sand was like landing with the brake on" is the way one rider described it to me. I saw several riders early in practice almost go over the bars

This awesome YFZ lands a jump and stays on the gas!

The sand favors the higher horsepower machines and this cannondale rider took full advantage of it!

The ocean makes for a perfect backdrop to compliment this YFZ working the track!

At times you couldnt tell that this was just practice!

The morning sun was perfect for pictures, unfortunatley the clouds rolled in for the remainder of the day

JINK was on hand racing and also had a set up on the boardwalk

This black cannondale was looking sharp and running very fast during practice

Elka suspension can be proud as its product soaked up everything this track could dish out! HMF pipe and Hiper rims round out some well known names installed on this ride!

This YFZ sends a wall of roost as it powers out of a corner

Daryl Rath was on hand both on the track and in the pits with a display of Rath racing products

Practice lasted about an hour, allowing most riders to get ready for thier respective heat races

The sand claimed this rider as he hooked a rut and flipped his 250R based ride on its top

With no harm to rider or machine , practice continued

90cc start found the 6 entries all trying to get out front!

Rider # 259 was the one getting the holeshot and led the others thru the first turn

[Pappy]

getting some air and remaining out front, #259 showed the big boys how its done!

Running 3rd on lap 1 this young rider works hard to get to the front!

[Pappy]

After battling each other on lap 2, the #1 plated rider finally makes the pass and looks for the leader

hitting the front straight the #1 plated rider makes some room between him and #97

[Pappy]

Taking the win, #259 hits the finish line jump and gets the checkered flag!

50cc had 4 entries. ground clearence would be a factor for these small machines as several need to be rescued from family and course workers

#38 grabbed the holeshot and took a commanding lead over the rest of the class!

Rider #1 takes the outside line and makes the pass on the other two riders. this would play to be the best move of the race as it helped him later on the 4th lap

On the 4th and final lap, rider #38 suffered some sort of mechanical failure. he was able to get going but 2 turns later it happened again.

With rider #38 having trouble, rider#1 took the lead. he pulled some distance but rider 38 was coming up fast on him. On the finish line jump, rider #1 got stuck on the lip!! looking back to see #38 approaching he made one final stab at the throttle and he cleared the finish line taking the win!!

As the heat races started it became confusing for me out on the track. I couldnt hear the PA system and an earlier attempt to obtain a running order wasnt possible. So relax, enjoy the pictures and Ill do my best play by play.


This class sort of made me take a double look at that utility quad entered. I did a bunch more double looks at that quad when I saw it air out some of the competition!

Rider #238 and #67 battled for the holeshot

I was expecting #67 to clear the jump when #826 came flying over it in second place!

The battle for the 3rd and 4th spots was heating up!

The battles continued everywhere I could point the camera. With quads disappearing behind jumps I never knew what to expect!

The utility rider wouldnt quit and was riding that quad for all it was worth!

#173 was showing good form

[Pappy]

Living proof it takes more then a high dollar quad to have fun and compete!

No sooner then the checkered flag dropped the green flag went up and another class hits the sand!

if im not mistaken, Rider#991 is Honda5 here on Exriders.com!

On the first lap this rider took a spill and was up and running in no time.

I dont think the boat got to him in time;)

No matter what the class is, bar to bar racing is a blast to watch!

Back on all 4 wheels, the previously wrecked rider does his best to get back into the action!

Running 1st and looking ahead to see what the next lap would bring!

2nd place on lap 2 and this suzuki rider sets sail over the finish line jump. The Marine Corps "Sarge" looks on in the back ground!

The one end of the course made shooting a breeze as it allowed me to merely turn and shoot another jump. This is a great shot of #28 with the ocean in view

Midway thru the race the action got good when 3 or 4 quads would do battle!

Sand was flying as the riders opened the quads up for a fast section of the track

Before i knew it this heat was over and as I shot the last quad I could hear another heat being started!

#33 was out front and wasnt looking back!

all the riders in this class seemed to have no trouble with this course and looked good out on the track

The sun was covered by dark storm clouds as this heat started. That didnt affect the quads as they were rollin!

The first turn finally caught up with this class and 3 or 4 riders got tangled amist a storm of flying sand!

#45 was out front with the competition closing in

Lap 1 complete and the gap started closing!

it was interesting watching how much the sand took away from the power of these quads. Riders did thier best in the turns but all you did was send roost while the rider in the straight pulled a little further away!

Leading the entire heat, #45 wins and is shown here working his way threw the ruts that got deeper every lap!

2nd place went to this YFZ rider in this heat

Before I could even think of getting to the starting area another heat was heading my way. This rider plows into the sand after landing a small jump

Other racers make there way threw this section, with teh YFZ rider getting ready to have Raptor for lunch!

A blink of an eye and another heat race was under way. This class was exciting to watch!

Rider#26 muscles his clean looking 400ex threw this very rutted section. The sand shifted after ever heat and these riders had to work for position!

keeping the 2-strokes on the pipe was the name of the game!

The heat races kept piling up and new quads were infront of me all the time!

This Cdale rider heads for the downside!

The Cdale power paid off as a twitch of the throttle sent sand flying!

This DS pilot sends his quad over the jump for what he hopes will be a soft landing

This Cdale and rider get ready for a nice single jump

Landing smoothly and on the gas kept this rider towards the front!

Rider #21 was the heat winner

the battle for 2nd and 3rd heated up with only a few hundred yards to go!

A full throttle assualt by Rider#209 left me wondering who took the 2nd spot!

As the heat races continued I did my best to move around and try and capture as much of the action as I could!

Any slight misque by a rider got the crowd up and looking!

The finish line jump was by far the favorite

I stopped trying to keep track of what heat was what! The action was non stop from 12 to 7pm!

When A or Pro class action hits the track there is a deffinate change in the sound and speed. This class was hammerdown from start to finish!

Next heat was a bit larger and looked like there could be some bar to bar action!

The race to the first turn would turn into a game of chicken!

#13 was out front at the end of lap 1

Lap 2 and #327 was in 2nd place and went pretty big on the finish line jump.

As #327 landed I saw he was a touch out of shape, leading to the next series of pictures!

i could see thru my lens that he was going to dump it!

By this point I figured these wre some LCQ heats. The honda got the lead but dumped it at the end of lap 1. The YFZ picked up the lead and looks back at 2nd place hot on his grab bar!

These 2 battled with each other the remainder of the race

It didnt matter there were only 4 quads on the track, this was one fo the best races of the day!

It appeared to me that stock tires were getting the job done.

We ran stock 400ex rears and Dune Trackers on the front of Clay Newbern's quad, 8 psi in the front and 2psi in the rear. This is the same as I ran and most everyone in the pit with us. It really works.

I just wanted to add that I bought a CD from pappy of a race he attended adn took pics at. I took the CD to a local store that lets you print out your own prints in any size and was amazed at the quality.:eek2: You won't be disappointed in the pics if you do buy them from him. :cool:

I have one of them (Wolverine) and they fly really well for their size - level as can be - just watch the nuts cause the landings are harsh!
