i have a chance to buy a 1996 dodge ram 2500 5.9 v8 5 spd trans. AC, short cab 8 ft bed tow hitch and a plow only 26000 miles not hard miles was previously owned by an 80 yr old neighbor babied this truck. he has been institutionalized for dimensia and the family has decided to sell the truk nd knows i want it but doesnt know what to ask. What should i offer them. The truck is in good condition rust wise but needs a tune up and some random part due to it siting so long without being driven.
What should i offer the family for the truck?

Be careful! If it runs rough at 26,000 miles it doesn't yet need a tune-up. They will usually go about 60,000 before they need a tune-up. Dodge had a few problems in the late 90's with plentuim gaskets (thats what they are calling an intake manifold gasket) They had a tendency to blow and cause low power problems.

I don't want to discourage you from buying it I just don't want you to get hurt in the deal either;)

By the way dodge makes a great truck 3/4 ton and up. half tons and dakotas use the 9 1/4 rear axle and I have issues about them. The truck is probably worth about $10k, If its nice (loaded). I would say $7k would be a good offer but I haven't seen the truck:confused:

Last year I sold my 96 1500 4x4 w/75000 on it and it sold for $8000. It was in great shape but for a 2500 with 26,000 miles on it I would say $9000-10,000. For $9500 I think its a fair price for you and the seller. I'm basing that on just the things you said but including it being a 4x4!!!! What kind of plow is it??
