what do they do and where does it go?

It advances your timing 6 degrees. The key raises the compession slightly by advancing the timing bringing the piston a little closer to TDC. This higher compression creates higher running temps also.

do they hurt reliability at all?

Wait a minute, how can it chnge the stroke?? As far as I know, it changes the ignition timing, making it spark earlier, which makes more power. I don't think it can change the compresion at all. The extra temp is most likely from it firing earlier, making a larger combustion. The key goes on the crank, between the crank and the flywheel. It changes the timing of the flywheel, which in turn, changes the ignition timing. They don't hurt reliability much, but the heat may, but it's not enough to do much.
