My first quad was a 400ex and I did fine on it. It's got good power for a first quad and is pretty forgiving. That price seems a little high but prices vary from area to area and I don't know where your from.

Ride 1 tank of fuel through it easy riding, then change the oil. I change mine about every third ride but very dusty ,hot, or muddy conditions maybe every 120miles two tankfuls but I'm probably harder on them than most.Make sure clean the air filter and oil it every ride thats the lifeblood.lube the chain and check the tire pressure before every ride.Remove that parking brake mechanism and cable it'll save you alot of trouble and brake pads.

the 400ex is a awsome quad and vey fast....the 300ex is also an asome quad but i think the 300ex is a much better trials bike beacause it is narrower and alos it does have reverse but the 400ex is way better bike for dunes and track and also a better wheelie bike............ but its ur decision

you're gonna be 17, and you've got some good weight on you. I'm 185 myself but I'm 5"11
I own an 03' 400EX and a Predator 500.
Basically I would suggest either. It depends on what you want to do.
If you want to mod your machine, get a 400EX.
If you want something that will be pretty smokin' out of the box (but by no means race ready) look into a new Predator.

I think for just starting out the 300 would be better but if I were you I would go with the 400 because the 300 is little and doesn't have much power and you will probably grow out of it in a hurry and then wish that you would of got the 400 so I would say, go with the 400. There's tons of stuff out there to supe the 400ex up too incase you'd ever grow tired of that.

definately go with the 400, but why not look at a used one if its your first quad. im 5'9" and about 195 also and my ex fits me perfect, the 300ex is too small and underpowered. but since its your first quad take it slow and youll be fine. you will get used to the power of the 300 in a couple of weeks and you'll be wishing you went with the 400. dont worry man i was the same way when i wanted to get a quad. your first one is jsut for learning on, id go with a used one for around 2500- 3000 and save the rest for another one in a couple of years. i got my 02 for 2500 and its mint with many mods. then next year you can get urself a 450r doesnt that sound sweet.

take a pred over a 400ex. you'll be happier. but if you can get a yfz you'll be even happier.

I started riding my 400ex when I was 14 years old and weighing 120lbs. I only really previously rode a Yamaha PW80 3-speed semi-automatic kids bike. Sure I've driven quads before, but not much and for sure not a racing quad.
