A few days ago I rode my cousins 1996 300ex. I rode it for a good 10 miles of rough riding or so. I own a 2003 250ex. One of the first things I notice was how much softer the 300 was. It went over the bumps better with out jarring you. As for power I honestly couldn’t tell a huge difference. The 300 didn’t seem to have the low end punch the 250 did, but the 300 made better power in the higher revs. It didn’t fall on its face at higher RPMS like the 250. The 300 has maybe 30 hours on it so the motor should still be in good shape. We are both very extreme riders and on and off the trails the 250 didn’t have any troubles keeping pace.

The one thing that the 250ex did have in its favor was the off trail riding. We have over 1000+ acres to ride on that have steep valleys with very few trails. The hand clutch got kind of annoying when truckin slowly up steep hills or climbing over big trees that were down. But when flying down a smooth trail I really wished I would have purchased a 300 or 400 because of the hand clutch, but I knew a lot of my riding would involve slow dangerous maneuvers where a hand clutch would get in the way ;) Over all I like the 300 a lot especially the handling. I didn’t see a lot of power difference on the trails, but they may have updated the 300 motor in the last 8 years LOL. I just want to make other 250ex owners feel better about there purchase because I see a lot 250ex bashing around. I have riding 3-wheelers since I was 6 years old and it seemed like a backwards step to get a beginners quad, but for trail riding its one of the better purchases.

250ex's are aight quads for just trail riding and cruising around, but take it out on a motocross track and see how it does.

I totaly agree its not a motocross bike, by far. But as pure off road bike it fairs great. I thought I read some where that the 300ex only has like 1.2HP more than the 250? Is this true?

about the clutch thing you don't even notice it when you get used to it just becomes natural or at least it did to me and never really rode a 300ex that much but loved my 250x wouldnt wanna waste my time on the 250ex but that just me and why they make all different types of bikes

ive rode both and the 300ex didnt feel like it had more power at all. The 250ex had a pro circuit pipe and XCT's

I ride a Raptor for the most part, but I bought a 250EX for my tight trail riding and it does so flawlessly. I can beat any 400EX in the tight stuff, just because of its physical size. I ran with a 300EX that a buddy has, and there were no huge differences. Both were fun to ride, and I agree that it's more of a manual-automatic clutch choice than anything else. I like the auto-clutch in the tight woods stuff, too. It's just handier when working your way over fallen trees, or pulling yourself out of a bog.
