Well, out of the box it is way faster than a 400ex, you would probably spend as much modding the 400 as you you would buying a 450r,,,, as far as reliability, I have a few hundred miles on mine, some extremely hard woods riding too,,, I havent had a single problem,,,, jusrt break it in right and change your oil.. feel it was worth every penny,,,, just my opinion though,,, good luck

I think it was worth the cash, but then again I was riding a 400 scrambler 4X4, so I made a big jump in suspension and power! My buddy on the other hand had a moded 400ex and he was not that impressed he could have spent 3000 on it and been able to hang with a 450r. But all a 450R owner has to do is spend a little money and kick his *** right back! What I am getting at is If you already own a 400ex it probably would not be a good choice to spend $6000 and then have to sell your old bike. If you dont have anything worth moding HELL YES IT IS WORTH IT!!!

It depends on what your riding now, If your on 250r or big motored ex No,it s not worth buying My 250r would smoke a 450,that was with a250cc jug.You can,t buy a stock 250r or ex and build decent for the money.you can buy used modded 250r or ex for less but that is used.Like I said it all depends on what you have now!

i had a stock 400ex with aftermarket suspension & sold itt o put down for the down payment...rpob. picking it up tomorrow or next day...didnt seem like it was worth my time to bore it out & spend the money & everything to have a more unrliable machine that wouldnt be worth anything once its time to sell later

Who on this website has a bone stock anything?I had my stock because I was waiting on a new big bore piston ,It did have a fatty pipe on it .It will ourun my brothers 450r with anHRC kit. We're fixing to put a sparks pipe on the 450 maybe that will let her go on!

Buy a 400ex save yourself 4000.00 dollars. Wait a few years your 400ex is paid off buy a 450r when the prices go down or people want to sell theres. If your just woods ridden the 400ex will do anything a 450r will. In 1999 i bought a 400ex new 6200.00 out the door. 2003 i bought a new 400ex 4300.00 out the door. Just my two pennies.:D

if i could go back in time...i would have kept my 400 and put a few thousand into it...

the handling sucks...i'm sorry, it does. it's so tight and if you want to to handle better you're going to put out about $1,200 for an axle and a-arms. when i enter corners my *** is touching the nerfs and it still gets up on 2 wheels. the 400ex's stock handlign was better.

i wouldn't worry about the frame...it's not going to bend or break unless it's used a couple years with extreme riding or wrecking...

the power on the 450R is a disappointment. you'll have to rejet it, buy a filter and pipe...that runs about $350 for a slip on and pipe.

the stock tires are not good for mx...the rear are way too heavy and it runs much better with lighter tires (less unsprung weight)and the tread pattern is too widely spread for mx riding. the fronts are too big for mx too. that's $175.

body...the rear bumper bent in half when i rolled it...the bars also bent in half. it was not a severe wreck, it only rolled once. the front bumper is ungodly horrible looking too. that's about $200.

nerfs run aroudn 150 for standard.

that comes to $875 just for the basic racing standards it needs to meet to be able to race.

you get a stock 400ex for $3,000.

pipe/filter=350 tires=175 reinforced rims=450 1200 for shocks
bars/bumpers=200 440 kit/engine work 800

about $6,000 for the 400ex
about $7,500 for hte 450R

plan on getting and axle and a-arms for both quads. you have $1,500 to get extras to make the 400 faster than the 450 then.
i'd get axle/a-arms anyway.

weight=the 450R is 30 pounds lighter but the front end it WAY WAY to light...the 400 flew perfect. i'd rather have the 400ex weight than the 450R. have fun spending money on that one...

with a used 400ex and parts...you'll get more bang for the buck than getting a new 450R and getting a few basics.

I have both and have ridden both side by side at the track to compare them --- the above post baffles me, the 450R is better in every way than even my modified 400EX - and I have thousands in my suspension 400EX..... The 450 is much more forgiving, is easier to ride, and is much easier to nail your timing on the jumps with.

Granted I still woods race my 400EX, but if on any kind of track the 450R has several very, very distinct advantages.

If the above post were true, I would have sold my 450R already - I've already got two 400EX's I've dumped a lot of cash into and if they were better or even equal I'd have no use for my R. Right now my plans are to go ahead and wait for 05 and replace my woods bike with another 450R.

I certainly hope the poster above isn't running stock tires on his 450R and comparing it to an aftermarket 400EX setup. The stock Raptor tires have far too much sidebite.

I'd also like to know how the 400EX flies perfect and the 450R doesn't, because their weight bias is the same (and the 450R is more than 30lbs lighter, than my woods 400ex anyhow - closer to 45~50lbs) --- I've had them both on the scales. When I've jumped mine I always thought it flew very nicely - maybe it's just me though ;)

:huh my 450r flys so much better than my ex......and what are u talking about the front end being to light, i think you mean your ex...cuz i could dump my clutch and the tires would just spin...just out of curiosity are you sitting on your rear bumper????

there is several people around here that made that same statement.. if they could go back in time they would not have bought the 450r...

the yfz and the honda 450r is not really all its talk to be..

i was riding my yfz down the road and punch it.. it reved and i was like this is boring.. lol

i guess i just got used to the power really fast..

but i am about to put a slip on on it but i dont know how that is gonna do becausse i am not removing my airbox lid.

i love honda to death.. .i cant believe i own a yamaha.
the r and the yfz are not worth 6500-above...

luckly i paid 5999.00 for mine:D

the honda 400ex and the yfz climb hills better then the honda 450r

and my buddy with the 310 r says his climbs better than all three.. but i dont know i wouldnt ever climb with his bike cause his 310r was sweet and i didnt want to hurt it..

310R isnt that modified a little lol. Your comparing a modified 250r to a stock 450r. Put all the motor work u can into the 450r wouldnt it beat a 310r?

In my opinion 450r and 400ex shouldnt even be mentioned in the same sentence, and who ever came up with the idea that the front was light is mistakin badly, my 450r has always flew like a bird in the air, maybe its just how good you can jump though????

The Trx450r is buy far a better quad! I love my 400ex but after riding my brothers TRX450r for the day at the dunes and then jumped on my EX..... its just not the same. The 450r is better.

i HAD A STOCK SHEE AND A STOCK 400EX.
THE TRX450R IS BY FARR A BETTER BIKE.

THE SHEE AND 450R RUNS LIKE A 2 STROKE.

THE ONLY THING I MISS ABOUT THE SHEE OR 400EX IS THAT THE R DONT ROOOST OR KICK OUT LIKE THE SHEE.

THE R HAS NEVER GAVE ME A HART ATACK YET "UNLIKE THE SHEE OR EX" THE R JUST EATS UP THE ROCKS, STUMPS JUMPS, RUTS, AND MUD, AND JUST ASKES ME TO DO IT FASTER THE NEXT TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

http://maddox.xmission.com/keyboard4.jpg That's the distance you'd have to move your pinky in order to not sound like an idiot. I know the burden of pressing shift to capitalize is a great one but you can do better than that. I used to type emails in caps like yours, but then I decided that I didn't want a job mixing concrete.
