TRX from what I hear is geared with a good 5+ mph more on the top end.

Mathematically 74 yfz / 78 trx

per the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC)

Ill bet you dollars to Donuts that on a salt flat at Sea level neither will top out faster than 72-74 mph. ;)

Now modified is a completely different story.

the yfz is geared so low from the factory , it would only make sense that the 450r would have a higher top speed

I've heard 74MPH on pavement. Of course I've got mine geared so low that I will never get to that speed.

FYI,

I was riding out on the salt flats at Knolls, Utah on Saturday and the elevation there is about 4,200 feet. I have the HRC Kit, running the stock Air Cleaner & HRC Kit Airbox lid. Still have the stock pipe with the HRC kit endcap. I am jetted at 180 main & I have geared it down to 13 tooth on the front. Still at 38 on the rear & my GPS showed me at 70.6 MPH. Sad thing is this TRX450R is my wifes bike and she is faster than me on my '86 250R 3 wheeler. With that I am geared with 13/39 but with a 6 speed tranny I thought I could pull her but she kicks my butt. I actually think its pretty cool. She was beating me and a '04 Raptor with stock gearing. When i had the 14 tooth front it felt VERY fast, but thats only because i had never been on a quad that would go that fast. When I gear it down to 13T It droped the top speed susbtansually. But, how often am i going 70MPH. I would much rather have that low end rip. I wonder how a 13T 450R would do against a YFZ's pounding 3rd gear. This would make the two bikes closer when it comes to gearing.

Duncan geared a 450R with a fatboy pipe that went 90mph.:eek2:

You lose 5.4 mph dropping down to a 13t front.

I'm not sure what all was done to this Raptor but he would beat me by a half a quad length everytime. Then there was another raptor that i knew was a yoshi pipe it could of had other things done to it but i never asked him. I beat him by 1-2 quad lengths everytime. Then there was another raptor i think might of been stock i beat by 3-4 quad lengths maybe a little more everytime.

I wouldn't say mint machines, they have problems, but so does every other machine. Probably just because it's a Yamaha they have to hate it.

Just because it's a "Craptor" doesn't mean it's slow, they have some good power and if it's modded out they can haul some major ***.

in the new dirtwheels, where they have the modded yfz and trx, it says they are dead even on top speed, the yfz just gets there a little faster. when i raced a guy on one, i got the jump, but then we would top out with him about a quad length or so behind me. i wasnt gained he was fallin. anyways, in the article it said that they both have stock gearing to go 80mph. now i dont know about all that stock, but maybe with a pipe, jets and filter, maybe it will be possible. they are both great bikes, glad to see the companies putting work into better motors, instead of just sticking a big engine under the seat.

dirtwheels also said a stock z would out run a raptor in almost every catagory. doubt it. i raced a couple weekends ago at a drag strip running 1/8th mile. at the top of 4th gear i was running 66 mph. they wouldnt let us run the 1/4 to see what it topped out at. i raced a raptor with hmf and it was about 2 tenths of a second slower. but you cant judge an atv on street, they are made for dirt or sand. i could of ran a better time in the dirt only because i couldnt keep the front wheels on the ground on street.

I had a Raptor for 2 years and I raced and pounded that machine, it never let me down. I had no complaints with it. I know that a Raptor will out run both the 450r and yfz in the long run(depending on mods). However, the yfz and 450r will get out of the hole alot faster. They are all good machines, it is a matter if you are loyal to one brand or the other.

And I do know this, I raced against a 450r 2 weekends ago, and the 450r could not even stay close to me on the supercross track. I had the holeshot by 1/3 over him. I know as well as all of you do that it is 80% rider. But then again you have to look at why the YFZ made 4 wheeler of the year, you have to admit it is an awesome machine. I know Honda will only improve the 450r as they get rider feedback and what not.

I am not trying to get anyone fired up, just my .02.
