I WAS WONDERING WILL A 12T SPROCKET HURT MY CHAIN
IS IT TOO SMALL, I'VE READ WHERE I GUY PUT ONE ON BUT THE GUY AT THE CYCLE SHOP SAID IT WAS PRETTY SMALL AND CHAIN MIGHT HAVE A HARD TIME MAKING THE BEND

You can run it but you will be pretty gear bound!

A 13t with a 40t rear would pretty much be the same and it would be easier on the chain.

Why would you want to gear it so low? Have you ridden it with the 13t yet. just wandering because with the 13t 2nd and 3rd were almost non-existant meaning I felt like I had to shift too much. But to each his own. Good luck.

I have a 13t sunstar on right now and it's works good but I have read so much on different setups and only one with a 12t.
I just thought I'd try it but I don't want to hurt anything.
I mainly ride at my house, we have 3acres and i want to build a track. I have a few jumps but we just moved in last July.
We also don't ride the gravel roads around our house:devil:
And if we get away we go to the Nebraska National Forest
The trails are sand with lots of tight turns, whoops, and hillclimbs
so really topend is hardly a issue unless my buddies show up
My wife rides all the time and has a 03' 300ex so the pace is never going to be fast for the 450r
That's why I was wondering on a 12t and also know that a 40t rear is big for a aftermarket skid plate
12t Moose sprocket is only $16
13t Sunstar was only 20
No big loss :D cheaper than filling up with 104 oct

The 40t might be cutting it close so I would check, but it should work.

I'm running 12/38 right now. I had the 450R out in the sand a couple of weeks ago and it was great. I could accelerate like a bat of hell and could putt around with the slowest of riders in first and second gear. I'll probably try the 12T in the dirt this weekend just to see how I like it. The 12T will probably work real well for technical trails though.

I do have to warn you that I broke a chain in the middle of the link. but the guy at the duneshop said the stock chain is kinda crappy for a quad with that much power. He said it had a 5500 lb rating and the new chain I put on had an 8000 lb rating. I've not had any problems since.

Hope this helps.

Who's chain did you use, and what did it cost?

I really doubt I will run the 12t much

Ya I was thinking that a chain was one of the next things I was going to buy.

I can't believe the chain broke already. I have a 1986 Honda ATC 250R 3 wheeler that I bought new in 1986 and just replaced the chain last year and I always run a 12 tooth front sprocket as that gears me right for the dunes. I think you got a bad chain. I'd have them warranty it....
