View Full Version : Eddieville 4 Hour Team Race

Anyone who has pics of this race weekend please post here:)

There were at least 76 teams racing in Pro, expert, amature, beginner, utility and womens classes. A very good showing for this area. This could very well be an annual or bi-annual event!

This was my first race ever, along with my teammates, chad400ex and his dad Arnie. Chad and I on 400ex's and Arnie on a Polaris Scrambler500. We were originally going to have a four person team but Bill (deepcj7) blew out his newly rebuilt by GT Thunder rear shock after about 1 hour of ride time on Saturday, he wasn't very happy as i'm sure no one would, pics to follow. Lets hope Gt Thunder comes through with customer service;)

So the three of us did the best we could, we had planned on entering the amature class but without deepcj7 we opted for the beginners class since none of us have raced before. It was a wise choice for us, most of the amature class was very fast compared to us.

We squeaked out 14 laps. I started and that went smooth stayed about mid pack until I hit the first set of whoops. F'ed up and stalled, 2-3 others passed me there. The first of several drop offs had a spotter which was good, the second didn't, bad for me, almost endo'ed. Thought for sure I was going over the bars. That slowed me down for the rest of that lap. I was a little faster and smoother on the following laps.

We all had a great time and finished without any injured human or quad parts:D All I wanted to do;) We ended up 16th out of 22 teams in our class.

I didn't get any pics on race day but have some of the Saturday play-day on the MX section.

Good pics Joe, I'll get mine up this afternoon. I have a lot of cleaning to do. I also need to go to Les Schwab and get a valve stem for a one of my front wheels. I had to change the front razrs our after the second lap, wouldnt hold air.

We, Pig Pen Racing, rode with a three man team as well but it was planed that way. We pitted next to NarlyR on race day, he is a pretty nice guy and a damn fast rider. Our team signed up to race in the amature class, though none of us had ever raced before. It turned out to be our undoing I think.
Amature class had the biggest turn out of the event with 36 teams competing. We finshed 14 laps in the four hour time limit. Had I been 20 seconds faster on the last lap, we could nave squeaked out on more lap:o As it was we finished 23rd in our class.
Im hooked and trying to come up with the cash to go to the next race in May in Richland.

Eddieville is a great place to ride, and the hosts of the event, The OverTheBarsGang, are great people. They worked nonstop to keep the track as dust free as is possible in eastern washington. They provided a lot of water spigots to wash your machines afer riding, kept the port-a-poopers clean, and had a great chuckwagon on site to feed the crowd.

I have a lot of pics to get on here, I'll get to it this afternoon. Right now I need to stay moving, or I'll stiffen up so bad I wont get anything done.

Good seeing you again Joe;)

Hi Jeff, I never got a chance to walk up and say hi But I saw you around a lot. Are the standings you have the corrected ones, or the same as what was posted on the side of the trailer after the race?

I know there were at least two teams contesting the count. Our team was shorted a lap in the original postings, wich bumped us down six places. We didnt make a big deal out of it because it wasnt the difference between a trophy and no trophy. But I would like to see the corrected standings and the finish times.

04-26-2004, 09:30 PM
He's doing alright. A little tired, but then again, so am I.

Ol' Dirthawg is letting me borrow his V-force on Wednesday so that the wife can try it out. She wants a quad, but doesn't know if she wants a clutch or an automatic. I'm hoping for the clutch option, but the V-force wouldn't be a bad 2nd bike to have in the garage. I'm making her start out on my 400, then if she gets frustrated with the clutch, I'll let her try out the automatic.

This boys now in the market for some new shocks, wider A-arms, and a wider axle. Going to try not to break the bank...but we'll see.

JOEX
04-26-2004, 09:35 PM
Breaking the bank will be worth it;) I'm damn close to sending all three shocks in for a complete rebuild:) If I can time it right...

What about a three quad family?;) :D

great pics guys!

my brother & i ran amature, he hadn't ridden in almost a year... so he was kinda out of shape. i was the rider on the far end of the amature line in one of the pics above... i got off to a mid-pack start. but stalled it when a bonehead on a blue YFZ that had stalled it in a corner decided to take off in front of me & i T-boned him, causing me to stall out.
we took 30th in amature, & 66th overall. we made 13 laps total(me 9, him 4) i made the last 3 laps & came into the check at about 30 seconds after closing... we made it back without breakdowns or major crashes, some hard hits gave us both sore wrists, but now everything is sore.
there was a real yardsale on the track... parts galore, busted quads, fenders, electrical,... who knows what else. i was in the pits when a team w/ a green V-force pulled in & ripped off a rear fender... they must have had a bad get-off. some people were really pushing thier limits.
they really put on a great event & everyone involved deserves thanks. i hope that this event grows, & i'm sure it will if it continues... (i wonder how they'll do the amature start if it gets too much bigger? what about the pits? :eek2: )

i rode at the WORCS races there & they did clean up some sections of the track & even cut out a short section(made a new section through some grass). it got rough in some spots, some of the sweepers turned into really slick hardpack 'blue groove' clay too.

we had a blast & will be back... i know i'm ready to go to Richland for the GP there too... may 22nd!!!

they have a solo GP race at eddieville on june 6th... quad classes start at 8 AM, race goes 4 laps usually.

:( I'm sorry to say that I know of at least one person that got hurt. Tye (pro class) had some kind of compound fracture of his leg. Rumor is, that his bone was sticking out of his boot. All I know for sure is that he was last seen at the hospital in the Dalls.
It happened on his first or second lap. his partner timmy is the real "Ironman" . Timmy got the holeshot (yellow banshee) and broke his bike on the first lap at the beginning of the g.p. section, ran about a mile back to the pits and handed off to tye. then tye crashed and timmy ran the rest of the race by himself.

 :eek2: :( OH man I'm pretty sure I know these guys & race w/ them @ Oakwood, YEP Tim is an ironman you should see him fly on the little track @ Oakwood LOL, thats a major bummer about Tye :( Hope he's doing ok, was he on a 450R?? Sounds like alot of fun & some carnage on the track!!

Thanks everyone for posting your pictures. I am always looking for race pictures from the west coast. It would be really cool if you guys could put together a start to finish race report for races in the future with resultsw, so I can add it to the race coverage section and put it on the Homepage.

Again, it is great to see fellow EXriders.com members getting together and having a great time. I will try to make out to a larger North West race in the future to get to meet everyone in person.

let me know if any of you guys would like to create a race report like the ones in race coverage because it would be awesome!!!

Thanks Again.

dirtmomma......... I have seen timmy fly at oakwood. My son is the one on the fast little blue blaster, and we race oakwood when he gets bored. we race mostely the longer tracks with bigger jumps.
after timmy had to ride the trx450 the rest of the day, he has decided to dump the banshee for a yfz. he'll be twice as fast now..........
so dirtmomma, what do you ride? and where? you should join us at the mx nationals at eddieville may 15th and 16th. the quad classes are beginner,jr., intermediate, and pro. my son rides the jr. class on his blaster. the won't let him run beginner because he is too fast.

I am sure you will see red in my future or maybe a new Suzuki.. Only time will tell. Any one going to the WORCS race in Milford, Ca?? I will let everyone know when the next team race is. no this is Todd. my son is Reed. you must race with my brother-in-law, Sean Mchugh.
we tried flat-track a couple times (tacoma dome and castlerock) but it wasn't our cup of tea. Reed likes to jump (sometimes farther than I like him to) and turn both ways, so we don't flat track. don't get me wrong, I'm not putting it down, (I used to flat track a 3-wheeler in the 80's) we would just rather do mx.
I do know paul and his sons dustin and zak. hopefully zak will be racing with us again soon.

next sunday hannegan will run a "youth blaster" class during the goldstar race if I can get 3 to sign up. so far we have reed, dustin, brian and mabey 1 more I talked to at eddieville. the 300ex can run the blaster class..........:D

I'll be right there with ya Joe. Are you racing or being a spectator?? We should go up there and practice. Longview is open 7 days/week. It would be a good chance to see what the race will be like. Even if I have to race on stock suspension, it's worth going out there and doing it again. But, hopefully I'll have some new shocks/arms/wider axle by then.

the race at hannegan is this sunday, may 2nd. hope to see you there.
I knew about this site for a long time, but I thought it was for "honda" riders. I assumed I would just get alot of yamaha bashing so I stayed away. stupid me. It seems like there are alot of friendly quad riders around. I hope to see more of you at the races and dunes. we can't race in the "worcs" races, because my son is not old enough. kind of odd......... he (and his buddy, who also can't race the worcs races) finished 4th at eddievile in the expert class.
so I only go to races he can race in. he has the talent and the desire to go fast. I'm too fat and slow, so I just do it for fun.

thanks for the welcome to this forum.:D

Nice to see some locals on here :) we need more more more though to keep up w/ them East coasters LOL WEll Daddio unfortunetly we won't be making it to Hannegan if it's this Sun, we won't get home till late Sat. if we even come home, we will probably take the motorhome & stay down south. Plus we would have to set him up for MX  My 300 is down getting some goodies so I won't be running either flattrack or Mx :( it's been down too long now BUT it should be worth it ;) But y ou guys have FUN & tell him good luck!! Here's a really good write-up about the GP that I found over at Quadsonly.com

Quads Only 4-Hour Team Race held Sunday April 25, 2004

It was a long time coming, but the results were great. Quad racing buddies
Brandon Brown and Chris Larson worked with the Over The Bars Gang Cycle Club
to finally put together an all ATV event at the Eddieville Motorsports Park
near Goldendale, Washington. The club has been putting on races for many
years, and has allowed quads at several of their events. Brandon and Chris
have raced many Euro GP events held at the Eddieville track 4 times a year.
They wanted to offer quad racers their own race, and the Over The Bars Gang
(OTBG) stepped up and found a place for it in their schedule. Brandon and
Chris rounded up sponsorships and promoted the race, racer to racer, at the
races they attended. They were at the track early, to stake and mark
corners, and were involved with the final layout of the 6+ mile course. The
Over the Bars Gang ran the race weekend in a most professional manner. The
motocross portion of the course was open for a club playday on Saturday, so
racers had a chance to try out that portion of the track, experience the
kind of mud that the loamy soil makes, and generally get ready to race. I
worked registration Saturday night, where we pre-registered 120 racers . . .
and the race wasn't until Sunday! The excitement was building. That
evening, after the course closed, there was a racers meeting where the
rules, and event logistics were announced. Mike, from OTBG, explained that
they are taking a stand with their strict enforcement of the 99 decible
sound limit for all their races. All quads were checked and stamped if they
passed the sound test. The club is hoping to lead the way to being "better
neighbors" and keep more riding space open. The pit area was marked out on
the ground, and teams were invited to stake out their spot. After the sun
went down, and the campers were settling down, there was still a buzz of
anticipation in the air. Just down the hill, and out of earshot, someone
with some awesome projection equipment was showing the movie Huevos Grandes
on the side of a trailer. An outdoor big screen TV ! Finally, everyone
turned in for the night, hoping for another beautiful day on Sunday.

I returned to registration in the morning. The OTBG ladies were doing a
great job, patiently explaining that the scrunchie tag thingie was supposed
to go on the left arm and the team number stickers went on the right side of
the helmet and the racers back. Teams also needed team names, and this
provided several laughs. The teams consisted of 2, 3, or 4 persons. The
Pro class raced for money, while the remaining classes competed for
trophies, and of course, the absolute bragging rights for finishing this
grueling race.

At 9am, Mke from OTBG ran the riders meeting, where the logistics were
explained, especially rules concerning the checkpoint and the pits. Brandon
then welcomed the racers and fans, thanked the sponsors, and explained the
race course from the quad racer point of view.

The racers lined up for the start. Pros in front line, Expert next, etc.
Each class started with 30 second intervals. Racers began on their quads,
engines off, waiting for the signal to start the quad and the race. A quick
firing quad was best. Electric starts were nice. too. Except for two quads
that got tangled up on the hole shot, the start went off without a problem.
The women and utility class was held up while 8 people (I have a photo)
pushed and pulled to get the two quads apart. I have been to several races
at Eddieville, and it was a joy to see wave after wave of just quads racing
for the holeshot. The course is usually 7 miles long for the Euro GP races,
but a section was removed to keep noise and dust down to an acceptable level
for some neighbors. With this many quads on the track at once, there always
seemed to be someone for the spectators to watch. As a spectator, I
appreciate that. Of course, keeping track of who's ahead of who in a 4-hour
race was the real challenge. At the end of each lap, the racer stopped at a
checkpoint to get his tag punched and the lap counters recorded the team
number. The tags were zip tied to a hair "scrunchie" that fit around the
racers left arm like a garter. After the checkpoint, the racer had the
option of heading out for another lap, or heading to the pits to exchange
the scrunchie and send another team member on his way. The pits were
orderly, with a strictly enforced speed limit. The pits were in clear view
of the checkpoint so racers were using hand signals to communicate with team
members. The long route to access the pits gave team members just enough
time to strap on their helmet and fire up their quad. After the exchange,
the racers exited the pits and merged onto the course.

Did I mention there were over 75 teams racing? That made for a rather
impressive pit row! Each team had a pit area, some better equipped than
others. Shade was welcome for the team members waiting, and the one coming
off the course, and of course, for working on the quads. The 70 degree
temperature was compounded by gusting winds that blew dirt on racers and
spectators alike. The course was well watered in the beginning, actually
quite muddy in places, but during the 4-hour race the wind, heat, and quads
made it rather dusty. Several racers' quads broke down, forcing them to
hike back to the pits to pass along the scrunchie to another team member to
continue the race. Of course, the breakdowns never seemed to happen nearby,
often as far from the pits as possible. Just ask Chris, who hiked back with
a one inch deep laceration to his calf. Ouch! After a trip to the hospital
for stitches, he was back in time to see his teammates finish. After the
race, I heard several teams making arrangements to retrieve quads left
"somewhere" beside the track.

At exactly 4 hours - the race ended. If a racer came through at 3 hours, 59
minutes and 59 seconds, that team was allowed to take another lap. After 4
hours, the racers came off the track and waited in line to record their lap
count. The punched holes were counted by two officials, the second time
with the racer. The highest lap count was 19. The number of laps and order
of finish determined the team's placement. It took a couple of hours to
provide the final results. The racers used the time to swap stories, tear
down their pits, pack up campsites and load their machines. Racers stopped
by the registration booth to claim their raffle prizes provided by numerous
sponsors. At last, the trophy presentation was done, the pros counted their
cash, and everyone headed for home.

A first time ever event, ran by an experienced motorcycle club, promoted and
managed by two guys who love to race quads. Success could be measured by
the numbers - 210 racers on 75 teams . . . I think the true success will be
measured by the SECOND Annual Team Race - next year. I am certain this
event will grow by leaps and bounds. Hats off to Brandon and Chris for
pursuing this dream. A special thank you goes to Jeff and Nicole Bocook of
QuadsOnly.com for promoting this race on their website and Mark Holtz of
Holtz Racing for adding $500 to the Pro purse. I really look forward to
next years race. I hope to put a video camera on a racer so that I can see
the Eddieville course from the riders perspective. Or better yet, next time
I'll join a team and race! Until then, watch for the Quad Squad ATV Club
members racing at race events in the pacific northwest. We are putting on
our first quad only race in 4 weeks. I attended the team race to cheer for
club members that were racing, AND to learn what goes into putting on a
race. I've been to several race sites, involved with my teenage son's quad
racing. I really appreciate what the OTBG club has accomplished and the
behind the scenes work involved. Once again, the volunteers make it happen.
Thanks to everyone for a terrific event. See you next year.

Quad Squad ATV Club

Thanks Tina!
I read the forums here a lot, but don't post much. Like daddio said also, I was kinda hesitant since it's a Honda forum. But everyone seems pretty nice, so maybe I'll have to chime in more often.:)
