I have basically done to mine, what you are asking about, 400ex stock bore wiseco 11.1 piston, hot cams stage one, mild port work, mostly cleaned up imperfections on the intake side. Yes it makes a big difference , motor doesnt seem to get any hoter, but I run race fuel 110 oct. straight. fmf powercore IV , k-n filter, Wiseco 11.1 stock bore, hot cams stage 1, mild port and polish, WB rev, keihin fcr 41, 50 pilot,165 main, 1 1\2 turns out on slow fuel jet, Gearing like it long - 16 front , 36 back , Great for sand drags, heck of a top end, ( If you want more top end you might try the stage 2 cam) I love my stage 1 , always hit rev limit, thats why im geared high and with rev box, ( I thank you would love the set up if you get it ) It will out run most and hang close with the others

I paid 375.00 for all of this( wiseco piston, stage 1 hot cam, mild port polish, also had the stock carb polished inside at that time too, gaskets and labor) For just cam and piston I believe it was 220.00 ) local cycle shop done the work.

my local cycle shop quoted me from 400 to 600 to break down the engine, replace my broken countershaft, then rebuild the engine with my new camshaft and piston. am i getting ripped off?? i feel like i am, i was only expeting it to cost a couple hundred

I dont know if they have to split the cases or not but it seems a little steep to me, Backwoods trails cycle, done my motor work, might call him (15733254044) travis is his name, ask him what he would charge for the job, He's a real good guy and nows his stuff. He's closed on mondays.

Any time they have to split the case you're looking at a few hundred. Labor at most shops is in the $75/hr or better range; so to tear an engine down completely, replace the countershaft, and reassemble including a fresh top end for $400-$600 isn't that bad. At $75/hr, that's about 5-8 hours of labor. I don't think I could do it that fast and be 100% confident about it.
