You are running to lean, time to go to the next size up jet.

Where you at in Oregon??

i have head numerous reports of this happening to stock head pipes that after a while of hard riding and improper jettig caused the headpipe to melt. might want to check that out.

My exhaust glows sometimes too...on long night rides, and when I've been at comp hill all day...but I guess my situation is a bit different...I thought I was jetted wrong too, but I'm not, the dealer told me the pipes would glow after a while...

Agree... pipes will at night get a little glow... BUT..he said RED HOT.. that is not good, that is running way to lean and you will ruin the motor doing that.. I have never heard of headers getting so hot that they melt off the bike before the engine ruins itself...but I guess it could happen???

it's normal on most four strokes to get there pipe red hot ..try leting a yz 426 stay still for more than 3 mins. it glows red. and my friends warrior did and it was jetted right. i never looked at the pipe on my 400 but it i bet it glows.

If your running a 42 pilot and a 165 main in a stock bore/head/cam/carb engine it is not too lean.
You failed to mention if the pipes get red hot while the quad is sitting still or while you are riding.

stock yes it is and i fired it up after changing the jets in the morning, the pipes were so hot it melted a little bit of my clutch cable owww! i really have no clue whats happening, it happend after like 40sec and it was parked im not sure what is it?

I figured the 42/165 would be too rich?

If you are using a Dynojet kit which is what I gather from you calling it a K&N then you need to goto the DJ170 jet and it should be fine.. If you have changed anything on your fuel screw since your first install, turn the mixture screw clockwise until it seats, then turn three and half turns out...and you should be idleing fine and running cooler.

thx for the info i found that my drain bolt was not toataly screwed in and i quickly tightened that could this be part of the problem? yes sorry it is a dynojet kit, o yes i will try this later today to put in the 170main do you think the dyno- jets run smaller or larger than oem. what notch should my needle be at? my altitude may be closer to 1000ft sorry for the long post.

Start with it on groove 3, and you should be fine.

I am unsure on the smaller, larger thing.. I know the numbers are larger then "standard" jets..so I guess I would say they run smaller... because a Dynojet 170 does not have as large of a hole as a "standard" jet with the same number..

Also you mentioned that the screw was loose, so you may have lost oil..check that carefully..that is how the Honda cools itself so it is very important..

I would inspect your ride for air entering somewhere between the carb and the cylinder. If your running to lean it's because your system is getting too much air and not enough fuel, look for fuel blockage in the carb or air leakage past the carb.
