I am thinking of buying a 400EX but I was wondering how far will a 400EX go on a tank of gas, or how long will it last on a tank of gas. Now I know you are gonna say that it depends how you ride, but on average...Thanks
Adam

more than any other 400cc or higher class quad. I'll try to find some numbers.

Let me have what your smoking.

There are a lot of variables in your answer, but I would bet you would get somewhere between 40-60 miles per tank of gas. Thats assuming your all stock.

For riding and not racing, I'd say 60ish miles. This is trail riding at a good, fairly aggressive pace.... Racing will drop this to 40ish or less and casual riding may be closer to 70 or so...

I figured it would be a lot less than that. But hell I have no idea.

When I rode my 400ex at the GNCC races I could go around 50 miles without putting on the reserve.

If you do the math thats between 25 and 30 mpg (not including reserve). Its 60 divided by 2.2.

Like you say, it depends on how and where you ride it, but here's some examples.

I normally ride a trail loop of just a hair over 11mi. Most riding is done in 3rd and 4th gear, with a few technical sections where 2nd gets used and several sections where you can get up into 5th and let it fly. I usually ride these trails with friends just for fun, so they aren't ridden at top speed. I usually do ride at a fast pace, but just a calm and casual type of fast. When my quad was stock I could run 4 loops (roughly 44mi) before I would re-fuel. I once tried to make a 5th loop and had to hit reserve less than halfway through the loop and then turn around and try to get back home without using too much gas. With my pipe, filter, and richer jetting, I can just barely squeak in 4 loops without hitting reserve. If I rode these trails hard, I'd probably have to refuel after the third loop, because there's so many open sections that you'll really use a lot of gas if you start riding hard. Considering that my Foreman 450 only gets around 60-65mi on these trails when riding at a utility quad pace, I don't think 40-45mi on the EX at a fast cruise is too bad.

The place where I really ride hard is my trails around my house. I have no idea how many miles I ride because I run one trail until I get tired of it and then switch to another trail and run it a while, but I can give you the time that I get per tank. These trails are very tight, mostly 2nd and 3rd gear trails There's one creek bank where I use 1st gear, one 4th gear straight through the woods, and a couple 5th gear straights on old logging roads. On a stocker I could get roughly 1hr 50 minutes while riding hammer down, and when I say hammer down, I mean on it for all it's worth at every opportunity. In stock condition I could easily pull over 2hrs by slowing down to just a fast cruise. With the pipe, filter, and richer jetting, I can only get about 1hr 40minutes while riding hard. If I slow down to a fast cruise, I'm on fumes and had better be getting gas at 2hrs.

60 miles to the gallon???????? I think mabey you need to read a little slower......... Its 60 miles on a tank before you hit reserve not 60 mpg. A 400 ex gets about 25 to 30 mpg for an average rider.

No updates? Just rode my 400ex on rockhouse trail system in WV. Rode from 10:30a to 3:30p and stopped for PB&J on the trail. Covered about 100 miles per an odometer on a Yamaha Grizzly. Rode quite aggressively and did not need reserve.
