2001 honda 400ex...Ignore my signature... thats what i have right now just not installed. I have a completely stock bike. CLick to see the pic the only thing i have is tires, maier fenders and nerfs. hooked the body up now going dig down deep. I have a brand new Curtis sparks stainless steel x-6 exause here. A hotcam stage 2. I am getting it port and polished when I do whatever I am doing. Now I have a 416 kit 11:1 comp. Now a good friend wants to trade me his 440 kit he just got (never been installed) He got the 440 big bore kit, sleeve and all gaskets. He just got a 450R and his girlfriend is getting his 400 so he doesnt want his g/f to have a 440. Now how reliable would my bike be with that 440 kit and just the exaust I have and port/polishing job. Or should I just be better off with going with what I have in my signature?? And I won't be running race fuel with neither. And can you please tell me what else I would need for my bike to be a completely reliable bike if I go with the 440. I would appreciate all the info I can get. What I am mainly looking for is reiabiliy. What should I do???? Mainly what we do if ride in open areas and a few little trails and every month or so we take off to go to the dunes and drag and do a little jumping. but majority just rideing up behind the levee (kinda like a wall for the misissippi river not to go over into our town when the river gets high) Mainly it just miles and miles of flat stretches. and u can go off into trails between the levee and river. I know its a good deal for me to get a 440 for a 416. Means i would get a brand new 440 kit for the 100 dollars I paid for my 416. But I would rather stay 416'ed if it will last a lot better. Just mainly list what I would need extra for both Kits to be all out reliable.

Personally I think the 416 is more reliable, If done right it will outrun most over the counter 440's..............I am not talking about a pro-built 440...........but most kit's.........416 is a good bang for the buck I am running 1 with a JE 11:1, HC stage 2 with other things I am real happy to show a few Raptors my rear end UU :D

Well I can tell you I have owned both the 440 kit and the 416 kit and the 416 kit pulls harder than my 440 did I am very happy with the (Ross) 416. I had alot of problems with the 440 blowing head gaskets and pulling cylinder stud bolts so I bought a new cylinder and the 416 kit and no problems since.:D

DO NOT get the 440, I had one and it was fine for like 6 months, then the studs pulled out and it blew a head gasket everytime I rode it. Now I run a 426, hotcams stage 2, springs, retainers, valve work, port, polish, Qwiksilver carb, X6 exhuast and I blow away other 440s and most yfzs, a 416 is going to be super reliable, but the 426 pulls the hardest out of all the big bores. A common problem for which there are known fixes. Just make sure you or your builder are aware of the issue.

Well, I can't believe it.. I posted this l;ike two days ago and yesterday I made my mind up and told him what to do. Stay with the 416. I went there today after I got off work, well guess what they were breaking it in. ANd I tell u that beast sounds bad. and he did something to the studs to where it will be very hard to pull.. I was amazed at how smooth and fine the port and polish does. I seen mine and a friends is doing his tommorrow. and what a difference. So, I now have everything in my sig and plus the guy even put me a k&n power lid on my bike too... So He said tommorrow hw is going to finish breaking it in and he got it jetted rigt but he wants to adjust the needle or something and I can pick it up tommorrow evening or sat... I can't wait.. I am still going to run a tank of gas before running it hard. I am just gonna vary rpms and let is downshift and rev down. Just to make sure everything seats right.

The cam is great it seems to have hard hitting power at mid to top end the port work was done by a guy here in Tucson and no I do not have oversized valves but may look into it in the future.

OLIMJ,

Known fixes like what? Helicoils? Timeserts? Tapping longer 10mm studs? I think not.. dont want to get heated but none of these things work at all. Believe me Ive tried just about everything. Its better off to buy a brand new cylinder and start over, say with a 416 or a 426. I will never build anyone another 440. If I did it would be an alky motor.

iride440ex,
Where you live in Tucson? Do you race at PMP or surrounding tracks?

Ah I see. You should come to Mammoth to ride. There is a race there on this Sunday and we usually have a pretty good quad turnout. I dont know what your level is but they have beginner, novice, intermediate, or pro. With more novices and beginners, no pros really show up to Mammoth.

Larger studs (http://www.markburkhart.com/FDO.html) , from what I've researched.
