Hello,

I am going to Oceano for the first time this summer. I am bringing all of the sand toys and driving my 30' RV. Can anyone give me some advice about driving my rv onto the beach. I have tried to find information about rv's on the beach and it looks like there are not too many. Is it possible? Do you see many people doing it? I have heard that there is a towing service that can escort you. I dont want to get all the way up there from San Diego and find out that I'm out of luck. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Well I have this freind who took a 32 footer onto the beach. You have to get onto the beach after high tide goes back down so that the sand is hard packed. To get to where you want to camp is the trickiest part though.. You have to first find a spot then just punch it all the way untillyou get to where you want to camp. The hardeest part is getting out. You dont want to dig the tires down. There are towing services but they are pricy. You can usually find somebody with a truck and a tow strap to get you out if you end up getting stuck.
Hope this was some help.

one thing thats importaint is to bring a lot of chain lube or wd40. the salt makes everything rust extreamly fast. ive been there 2 and i cant take the rust. wd40 everything at least once a day. and last time i went, we brought our 35footer, and had to park somewhere hard(closer to the water). then we went for a 1 hour ride, came back and our rv was in 1 to 2 inches of water. so, park in someplace hard but not too close to the water!. and not to much in either, we learned that lesson the first time we went and had to get pulled out.

its better to get pulled out from the sand then the SALT water. I have no problem lending a hand to some one who is stuck. If I can not pull out the truck or rv one of my buds in a bigger truck will be able to. Like cal440exrider said find a spot and just go for it. Dont worry about getting out until you leave. There are nice people out there that will help you.

You just have to make sure and air down your tires. I've seen plenty of motorhomes out there with their toyboxes. There is only one tow company that has the contract to do anything on the beach and they are expensive. Somewhere I have heard in the neighborhood of $100 plus just to the ramp and then hourly after they get off the ramp onto the beach.

Don't worry about the towing services, there are plenty of guys with big trucks willing to tow you out if needed. I've seen 3 or 4 trucks linked together before to tow somebody out. As long as you leave on a weekend you should have no problem getting some help. Unless you camp really far back or in some really deep sand you should be fine anyway. What kind of truck do you have? I've seen some little 4x4 S10s hauling some big trailers out of the sand. All Terrain tires and airing down always help as well.

You might want to consider making reservations because sometimes Pismo can be packed and you wouldn't want to dirve up there and find out that they are full.

A couple tips for you taking your RV to pismo. Here are some tips for going to Pismo and they are in no particular order....
Tip #1: You can check out the high tide information on the internet. ( http://www.classiccalifornia.com/tides.htm#jun ) Tip #2: If you can try and make it when the high tide is on it's way down, you will be able to make a better decision where to park. Don't want to come back from a ride and find your self in the water. Tip #3. If you don't make it within 20 mins of high tide definitely take the time and air down your tires to atleast 12-15 psi. and your trailer tires too. It will keep your tires from sinking. Tip #4: Park your RV with driver's side facing the ocean because all of the ocean breeze/wind. Tip#5: Bring someting to cover your rides overnight to eliminate anymore salt air moisture that your rides will receive. Tip #6. Bring a shovel because if you park by the shoreline, you can dig a moat on the shoreside. Tip #6: Make reservations ahea of time to ensure yourself a spot.

As far being stuck, it is expensive to be towed out. Generally, other visitors are nice and are willing to help out another ATV enthusiast when stuck. Just don't bury yourself.

Haven't been to Glamis yet. I do Dumont in the Winters and early Spring, and Pismo late Spring through Summer. Be forwarned that the dunes at Pismo look inviting. Don't be going full throttle away from the beach while carving the dunes, as there are drop-offs due to the offshore winds. I find myself duning more cautiously at Pismo as compared to Dumont. Pismo is a sandbox, and therefore you will find more beginner riders out there than you would at Dumont or Glamis.

Not trying to knock the place down because I enjoy myself a lot when I go.

yea, just take it easy until you feel comfortable w/ the place..

if you look hard enough you can find some great jumps, flat landing or jumping into bowls, you cna find it all especially if you are looking for them. you will have a great time, dont worry about getting stuck until you are stuck, lol

just have fun until then ....then you can worry

Good point I get stupid sometimes and have had some close ones. After I got my 426 done I came oa dune in 4th and flew I just layed back and had 1 hand on the handlebar, luckily I landed smooth and was ok.

A few times I dropped off dunes and landed on a flat spot and also got hurt bad.

Just take it easy at first and remember the sand helps cushion your fall. Oh and alwayd ride with a friend.

I was at Pismo this past weekend and what the heck was up with all that wind. One good thing about the wind is that it smoothed out the sand. It made for some great riding, but my camp was tore up.

I'll have to get a more accurate weather report from some of you local guys over there before I go again. I didn't get a chance to see if any of you guys were going to be out there.

Hey foleyit, I was there as well and man did that wind suck. We were riding and a witch's eye caught me off guard. I sprained my ankel pretty bad. The worst part of the trip was driving home with my 5 speed transmission and a sprained leg. We had so much traffic because of the fire. Did you have to go thru 154 to S.B.?

I went over for a quick ride on Saturday and agree, wind was bad. It has been like that if not worse the past month or so. Can't remember a calm day in quite awhile. If anybody needs a weather report shoot me a PM or post a thread, got ya covered ;) And for the record, it is still windy today (Tuesday)

Sorry to hear about the ankle there Sand Luvr. Nah, I didin't leave Sunday until about 1 pm, and they had a sign that indicated that the 101 fwy was closed. So I jumped on the 166 out to the 5 thru the grapevine. Not too bad considering some friends left about an hour earlier than I did and I got home about 2 hours before they did.

I can't believe how many witch eyes I came across out there. I was out carving Sat. night, and almost hit that abandoned black Toyota truck stuck in a little bowl. :eek2: I was camped between poles 3 and 4 right next to the entrance to the dunes.

I'll definitely PM you K2 to see what's the weather like up there.
