do 18 inch tires in the rear make a real difference?

Depends on what kind of riding you do.

I'm assuming mx? If so then yes they make a difference. You loose alittle ground clearance but you don't need much when your mx racing.

yes it makes a different. i have 18in holeshots and love em. i race mx and arenacross. i like the accel it gives and the holeshots slide nice. only time i'v ever run a different tire was for my last arenacross cuz the holeshots were bitting too much in the tacky dirt and making me wanna tip and the stocks seem to grab a little less. but other than that they have woked great in races. my dealer said only run about 5psi in them but i like to run 10.5psi cuz i kept poping tires if i landed sideways on big jumps.

18's are the only way to go. I've run MXR's, Tamers, and Kendas and they are all good in their own way. You also may want to regear if you drop to the 18's. I have kept mine stock and am satisified.:)

how bad is the drop on the top end when going from the stock size 20's to 18's? I like mx, but i also do alot of backyard screwing around and don't really want to lose 20mph on top.

It depends, I am thinking of changing mine too. I run almost all mx and I am not going tapped out in 5th gear all the time either, but then again, I have plenty of low end grunt. So I think I am going to regear to gain some more top.

 So would you rather have 18" in the back or 20"???:eek2:

Seriously, is there any difference in changing from 20" to 18" and keeping the stock gearing vs. keeping the 20" and going to a 14 tooth front gear? seems like it would be about the same. Unless you went to 18" and a 14t gear in which your low end would be so short that you would have to start in third gear. what's the point in that?

15/36 is close to the stock feeling with the 18'' rear tires. I run 15/37 with the 18''s personally

acording to this, it would take roughly 16/37 to get you pretty close to stock again with 18's

whats the stock size sprocket on the 400ex?

If its under 14, then going to a 14 would give you more top end, not bottom end..

I think you got that mixed up ;)

a 14tooth with a 18" tire would get you close to stock gearing.. Now going down a tooth size would give you gains in bottom end, or going with a bigger rear sproket would also give bottom end..

No, stock is 15t. 14 is giving you more bottom end which is the same thing a 18" rear tire does.

I normally use 15/37. I rode this past weekend with 14/38 and i hated it.It seemed like all i was doing was shifting gears the hole time . I think if you just keep stock gears with 18 in rears you'll love it

i have 18's and 14t sproket and no u dont start in 3rd gear its a 2nd gear start but i love it. i lost top end but im pretty much strictly mx harly every tap it out in 5th so its no big deal to me. but when we get my 440 back we are going to run a 14/39 gearing with my 18 in tires for a 3rd gear start, easy holeshots. wont have much top end at all but its gonna be awsome for mx.

i run 18's with 14/38 gearing ...

u dont loose that much top end ... and u dont have to start in 2nd (in racing you do ... or should) ...

if you like acceration ... you'll love that combo
