View Full Version : My sleve shattered, Why?

I have a 400ex that i bored to 416cc and put a Ross piston, hotcams stage2, Doma exhaust and a k&n air filter and after about two months of riding it the sleve shattered. I took it all apart and there are hundreds of chunks of the sleve in the case and jammed between the case and my crank shaft. I was just wondering if anyone knew why this happened.

Could if have been a bad bore job because I don't know if i want to take it back to the same place.

It could have been bored unevenly, or too far out. If it was in fact bored too far, the piston would rock and could have eventually caught and broke the sleeve that way. At the same time, sleeves can and do break with little or no cause. Boring it weakened it, and it may have been too much for it to handle. There are many possibilities though, so deciding on one cause without having the motor in front of me is impossible.

did you ever run with lo or no oil? if so the sleeve can get to hot then crack an in time it will just blow up.

This is what happend to my old 440
