Isnt it possible to just change the timing on a 400ex or would you have to buy the timing key?

I'd rather go with the sparks key, $20 and no worries.

It doesn't have a distributor cap that you can turn or any simple adjustment. The timing consists of two key components. First, you have a trigger on the flywheel that's attached to the crank. Second, you have a sealed ignition module that's encased in rock-hard epoxy. You can't simply open it up and change the timing. It is nearly impossible to chip away the epoxe without destroying the electrical components inside.

The timing key works by physically rotating the flywheel on the crank, therefore it advances the trigger mechanism attached to the outer rim of the flywheel, effectively advancing your timing.
