View Full Version : Parking brake adjustment

03-15-2002, 10:46 AM
After spending many years as a hardcore 4x4 guy I decide to switch hobbies just bought a 2002 400ex. Everything is stock for now until I master how it performs stock. After the 3rd trip out I noticed that the parking brake didn't work, yet the rear brakes worked fine. I figured I just needed to adjust it. I am just curious if there is a wrong way to do this and if so how would I know if I did it wrong or correctly. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.:)

The E-Brake on the 400ex is about worthless. Your best bet is to get an E-brake blockoff plate and remove the E-brake altogether. Over time you will find that the E-brake will wear you rear brake disc down faster if you leave it on there.

i agree. I tried to keep it adjusted on my old 300ex, and it was an every ride thing. Get rid of it. If you have to park on a hill or something, just leave it in gear. However, when you trailer it, I've heard not to leave it in gear because of wear. ziptie the front brake if you don't trust the tie downs.

Buy the MSR Raptor(style not the quad) clutch. It is adjustable and you can choose between "standard" and "shorty" styles. If you happen to break a lever you can replace just the lever. I love mine, set to easy-pull with the shorty lever.

True, the parking brakes on a 400 are as useless as nipples on a guy. Get a parking brake block off. they are tons of them out there

I think they look better too and they can save your brake pads. You can get some of those plates for like 10$

The best way to adjust it is to just take it off. thats what i did with mine last nite. looks alot better and dont have to worry about it frezzing up and causing my rear brakes to drag. just my 2 cents
