View Full Version : do air scoops help for trail riding?

wvspeedfreak

I have a 400ex that I use mainly for trail riding.Alot of the time it is really tight trails and you cant get your speed up for a while to get some air moving.I was wondering if air scoops would be good to help give the engine a little extra cooling at these low speeds or do they mostly just work at higher speeds.Any input would be greatly appreciated.

before scoops i could ride with shorts...

after i couldnt. they really do direct the air where it does some good. even at slower temps it will help

Yes, they do help. I could really notice the heat blowing on my legs after I put them on, so I know they are funneling air across the engine. I run OMF scoops.

sga: how much do those run for a 400?

pappy: what kinda scoops are u runnin? omf also?

They arent cheap. 55 bucks or so. I think Tinner sells some on here for less.
I will say the OMF scoops are very well built and come with all the hardware and directions to make the job easy.

apparently SteveATV2 makes a good set on here...PM him for some pictures yay...4000 useless posts

Check out the Crowley Off-Road scoops. They fit great, like they xame from the HONDA factory and they look awesome. Strong and easy to install. He is also a member on here. Do a search for these there are some pics of these on this site. I think I paid like $45 shipped.

My PRM scoops are very nice...they're similar to the OMFs but don't have the curved front edge and are a heck of a lot cheaper. When I bought mine, they were only $35 or so...I think they're around $44 now. A couple things that are nice about the PRM scoops is that they bolt on at existing fender mounting locations with stock hardware and they also follow the line of the fender very closely, helping them be more efficient and to look nicer IMHO.

i dont really know how much they help but they definatly make it look much better and i think the omf's look the best plus my buddy also had a problem with his tinners cracking

I have the OMF scoops and they arn't cheap. I got them off of magicracing.com. I wish I would have gone with the tinners. First time I roled opne of them bent pretty bad. They do clean up nice though:D

If anyone has any questions about mine...please email me. I don't want to get in trouble for posting info. Goat, if your buddy's scoops cracked..it was probably from not mounting them with all the hardware. I honestly haven't had too many problems with that. I have had a few people that installed them incorrectly, and were honest about it....and I took care of them. Not many people would do that. I am not going to say it isn't possible for them to crack....I guess anything could happen when your hammerin' stuff. As far as the scoops directing air...they direct it, the faster you go...the more you will get.

Scoops are cheap insurance. Even if they just help a little, its' worth it in my mind.

Now for dune riding or racing, I think they are a must.

Several versions of 400EX scoops are usually on eBay.

Hey, are these PRM scoops? I'm not sure what they are since they were on my girlfriend's quad when we bought it. I figured they'd go better on mine. :p I like 'em tho... seem to pull the air through better and mount oh so easily...

I don't think that tinners scoops flow near as much air as Crowley or OMF. They are small, miss alot of air over the top of the scoop and with them sitting that low looks like alot of air gets blocked by the shock. Also just how much of the scoop actually sends air over the oil cooler? It doesn't look like much. I am not trying to nock his scoops just the design isn't as good as the others. Just my .02.

theres a picture where you can see how far they stick out.. i think pretty much all air scoops are going to be the same, IMO his are great

Quadworks
04-20-2004, 10:14 AM
Yes, but there is not much air being directed over the oil cooler where it would be very benificial.

I bought mine on e-bay a few months back. I paid middle $20's for them and they are great. They are home made, but look good. They bolt on with existing hardware, curl out at the ends, and are a lot cheaper.

Those are the Crowley Air scoops i believe, they hook to the front fender bolts

also seem to direct more air towards the oil cooler, not air flow at the engine

K&n vs. Usi...

Heh?! I recognize that quad. :D Yes, those are Crowley Offroad scoops.

These scoops are designed to send more air to the oil cooler & the engine. The picture above is hard to tell because of the shock reservoirs.

Here is another picture that might help:

Thanks for all the Pics Mr. Parent.:D BTW, nice machine ya got there. Quad works, I guess you'd have to see a set of mine up close. As far as air hitting the oil cooler goes...they sit about 1/2" below the top of the cooler. Above the top of the scoop where it mounts...is the frame...no air can get through that because of the way mine mount. The scoops sit out far enough past the shocks to get plenty of air to both the engine and oil cooler...so yes they do function. I guess that is where designs differ. Crowdogs scoops look nice, and functional as well. They both do the same thing....direct air...his mount to the plastic and mine to the frame.

Crowley Offroad (http://www.crowley-offroad.com/honda_400ex_air_scoops.htm)

And they don't mount to the plastic. They mount in three stock bolt locations that the plastic mounts to. Turns out to be very sturdy.

Yes, but that could be said for almost all 400ex air scoops...
2' X 2' Galvanized Sheetmetal/aluminum $3.85
Tin snips $7.00
=========================
Total $10.85
If you were to make some,..would they fit?
Let me know how they turn out......

Well if u know how to measure things and your not an idiot chances are they'll fit, and if your REALLY smart :macho you'd buy a pair and measure the diameters of those and design them around those measurements....make 10 of them $11 x 10 = $110 spent + $50 for the pair u bought = $160....sell your 10 for $40......profit $240

i'll let u know how they fit:devil:
