need help with ball joints

i recently got lonestar a-arms for my 300ex and it appears that the ball joints are shot......i mean is there ne way to know when the joints are broke or not

Is the ball joint lose. if you have free play, side to side or up and down I would go ahead and change them. They only wear out they souldn't break.
