well i'm sick of wearing brake pads out constantly so i want to try something better...

i hear u can put a crf450 calipar on the 400ex in the rear to give it a dual piston brake and let pad life last longer... i'm sick of gettin pads once a month ( i ride alot of mud)... it will be cheaper for me to switch over and last longer...

what all do i need to set up the rear with a crf calipar... i know i heard of people doin this... i'm pretty sure pappy had it also...

i thinhk it was a crf front caliper with a diff mount

Tommy 17
04-16-2004, 04:48 PM
yeah... a brand new calipar is only 54$ on service honda... thast 2 sets of pads...

if i need a mount they are usually in the hundred dollar range... but i'll see what it is and mayb can make myself one on the CNC machine at school... i just have to talk to someone that has it and see what i need...

if its under 100$ i'd be amazed and it'd be worth it to try it...

if you find a mount, let me know, I might be interested.

you need:

1 Front crf bike caliper (ebay for less then $50 and they come complete)

1 250R brake rotor

1 250R brake rotor hub

1 GT Thunder Billet brake mount $40

It is a good mod and well worth it. Id be interested to see if a 450R caliper and mount and hub and rotor would fit teh 400...i have a suspision it will

What kind of pads are you running? I used to use EBC and the would wear out fast, then I switched to Ferodo pads and they have been great. I race some muddy and sandy places and they still have been holding up nice.

i've tried just about every pad out there on the market... no luck with anything...

that sucks, but i bet the crf conversion would stop a little better also.

i have a 250r rear caliper on my 400, not the cheapest mod but gets you quite a bit of ground clearance for mx, wish i would have waited a couple more months though, all the new parts for the new 450r can be had for around $250 from service honda and comparing the two the new 450 has a way better feel to it, don't know about the longevity though

I was planning to run the front caliper off a 450f but what year? it says on the service honda website 2002-03 and the 2004 are different

Please let me know before I spend good money on parts that won't fit.

I have the 250R setup on mine (dual piston) but I also have the 250R axle, which gives me extra width and is adjustable also. Keep us informed on the 450r and the 450F mount just incase something happens to my caliper.

will this mod work for the 300EX?

Pappy
07-07-2005, 07:46 PM
i dont think it will work on the 300ex.

use the crf caliper from the earlier years as i know they will work.

and calling gt thunder might be a good idea because since the newer quads have been released i think they stopped making the bracket.

k, thanks pappy. And you use burgard products right? Well, i just bought some +2's for my 300, am i gonna like them?

Pappy

i personally have never had one issue with his arms. ive been told the 300ex are a very tight fit but did not expierence any problems installing them on our 300ex. (and i grab boxed arms not special ones set aside for me..lol)

if you have any problems i will always do all i can to help out.

alright, sweet. They are used, so maybe they wont be as hard to fit.

When I got my mount from Gt Thunder he had a used one. But by the way he talked I think he could get more. Works just as well as using the 250r caliper but its a lot cheaper to get a good crf caliper. You will need a shorter brake line too.

Yeah I am, you cant unthread the nut as much as you could with a 250r axle but it has always stayed tight.

I'm currently working on an adapter to allow the use of a CRF caliper on the stock caliper mount w/the stock rotor. This will keep the caliper location near stock, so you shouldn't need a shorter brake line either.

Extra ground clearance isn't that big of a deal to me, so that's why i'm going with this route. Personally, I feel that if you don't absolutely need the extra ground clearance, the larger stock rotor is much better due to the fact that it can dissipate more heat. In addition, the CRF pads make better contact with the stock rotor as compared to one from a 250r.

I should have the AutoCAD drawing done soon...then my buddy will put it into MasterCAM and we'll run it on his CNC machine. :D If it comes out nice, I may make a few to sell...who knows... :)

Now that sounds like something I might be interested in. All you would need to buy with that bracket is the CRF Caliper and Pads then...

You guys really think getting a twin disc caliper will help in not using as many pads. Mud is the biggest factor in using pads. EBC Severe duty pads are the best for mud, Not trying to be an *** just stating from experience

Give JB Racing a call 1-814-922-3523 or www.JBATVRACING.com Jody made my bracket. I think Jody carries the bracket for the 02-03 front caliper and the 04 front caliper.

I'm still in the process of making an adapter plate to mount the CRF front caliper onto a stock 400ex rear caliper bracket. I can run a few extra once we get the prototype done and properly fitted.

Look for it sometime this fall... ;)

here is the info ya'll needed. I have a 400ex w/ a 250r axle, antifade nut. well I had 250r rear brake on that but went to all hell. well I bought a 450r caliper and caliper bracket and it fit perfect on the rear end. no need to buy expensive brackets its awsome. now I have solid brakes.

Use search and look for "450R brake conversion", this will give detailed instructions on how I converted my 250R rear brakes over to a complete 450R set up. This should work on a 400EX also. I have all the part numbers so you can check Service Honda for prices. It should cost just under $200 for the whole deal.
