i just installed a sparks timming key and a 14t sprocket on my 400ex. and i must say WOW!!! this thing pulls hard. i just took it down the street and its arm ripping power man. also have pipe, filter air box mods and good jetting.
i can pull wheeles in 3rd no problems without even try'n. if any one is looking for some extra power from their 400ex i say go with 14t sprocket and timming key. it will put a smile on your face. and it only cost me like $30 for sprocket (canadian) and $20 for the timming key (us) can wait to take it out on track on trails.

I've been reading up a lot about modifications to make my quad compete with the big boys.. is there somewhere I can find more info on the timing key? Haven't seen that yet.

The timing key is a waste of money!! The difference you felt came from the 14T sprocket. Do a seacrh on here on timing degree keys. If you take the key out and leave the sprocket on, you won't feel any change at all.

I did the key long after my 14t front sprocket and I still noticed a difference. I used my cat eye computer to verify top end speed, and checked acceleration and wheelies in the same spot back to back...the key made a difference for me. I guess it depends on the fuel you're using, your riding style, and what other mods you have on your machine.

I just put a sparks woodruff key on my bike. Its had a 14 tooth front sprocket since before i bored it over, put a hotcams stage 1, and put a je 10.8:1 piston in it. I rode the bike for months without the key and now that i have it i love it. Just installing the key made it come off the bottom end way better. I still retained the low end and midrange torque from the stage 1 hotcam but I got some serious throttle response from the key. It runs slightly warmer but I run 50/50 mix of 110 octane and 92 octane gas. Just installing the sparks racing key has made hooking up an issue and I need to buy some haulers or sand stars now.
