it's not your chain that you need to be fixing it's the timing chain tensioner, and also a clymer or honda service manual is money well spent you really should invest in one http://www.exriders.com/vbb/images/icons/icon14.gif

Check the tensioner like suggested. If that's not the problem, and you have to replace the chain, its a good idea to get the manual. You will need to remove the clutch cover, clutch basket, and some other smaller gears in there.

ok i took the two bolts off to get the tensioner off, but how can i tell if its bad? Also to get tot the cam chain do i just take the cover off of the side or does the top end have to come off too?

To check the tensioner, you need to remove the cap in the center of the tensioner. Then stick a small screwdriver in the center (where the cap threads into, you will see a slot for a screwdriver) and turn it. The tensioner should retract, and should have some tension to it. If it does, its good.

Sorry about that, yes, you also need to remove the head cover so that you can access the cam/cam sprocket also.

the tensioner should also spring back into place when you remove the screwdriver

You can download the service manual here http://www.atvnc.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=3170 . Make sure to get a clutch hub tool, along with the clutch cover gasket.

ok sorry to bring this topic up again, but i got it out, and im going to get the 450r cam chain, and should i just replace the side gasket or both on top and the side? Also should i replace the chain sliders while im in their too or is there no need?

thx again

you just need the side gasket cause the top one is steel.

Did you check the valves? are you sure it`s the timing chain thaat is making the noise?

Going with a 450R or CRF450R timing chaine is a good idea.

Yea its def the chain, so i don't need the top gasket, what about the sliders that the chain rides on?

well it's kinda hard for us to tell you since we haven't seen you sliders :huh

it all depends, how much wear do they show?
